Ferrari readying high-performance 599 GTO?

11/19/2009, 3:45 PM

By Drew Johnson

Any Ferrari model is top-performer straight from the factory, but the Italian automaker is reportedly readying any even hotter version of its 599 GTB Fiorano. The high-performance model is said to be based on the 599XX show car that debuted at last year’s Geneva Motor Show.

Whereas the 599XX was designed as a hardcore racer for the track, the new 599 model – believed to be named the 599 GTO after the 250 GTO of the 1960s – will be a racecar for the streets. Although a bit softer than its show car-counterpart, the 599 GTO will sport plenty of added performance, following in the footsteps of the F430 Scuderia.

At the heart of the 599 GTO will be an up-rated version of the base car’s 6.0L V12. The 599 GTO will feature at least 680 horsepower, but several reports have indicated the final figure will be closer to 700 horsepower. In addition to the added power, the 599 GTO will also shed about 150 pounds, making for an all-out performance machine.

No official word on when the 599 GTO will finally surface, but a reveal at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show seems likely. Production will be capped at 500 units or less, with a price tag to match the 599 GTO’s exclusivity.

pointless… I like all kinds of cars but cars like this are not needed. Who needs neerly 700hp for the street? Even if it was purcahsed for just trackdays or whatever, I would be affraid to drive it because I would be worried about the price to fix it if something went wrong.

@ kingston , this car is like the SLR 722 GT , big , heavy , lots of power for the super rich , but not really fast er on a track than lighter, less powerful cars.

@ kingston: this car may be pointless, in a practical sense, for you or me, but I still love hearing about it. Certainly more exciting than news about october sales figures and new pedestrian safety standards, doncha think? C’mon, have you lost touch with the little boy inside of you that had posters of countaches and 959s on his bedroom wall?

Who cares if this is impractical, it makes me smile just knowing it exists. The whole reason I come to this site is to read about cars like this, not about the latest car company loosing money.

And, don’t fool yourself, this car will be blazing fast. It may be heavier than an all out racer, but 3500lbs in a 700 HP car works out to be about 5lbs per HP.

Not much will be able to touch this, either in performance or exclusivity.

Can I have one please?

kingston, obviously you cannot afford a Ferrari. If you have that kind of green, you crash one you just whip out the old chk book and buy a new one.

Wow, can’t wait for this car! Most of us don’t have the kind of money to buy most the cars posted on LL but if we could, most of us would buy the ones that seem almost pointless yet would be a blast to drive. Ferrari has buyers for these cars so if they can’t turn a profit and make a sick car, why not?!

Why are people so stupid on here?

“This car is pointless.” Ummm so is the Enzo, so is the Veyron, and every other hypercar out there isn’t it……

It is a show of force. That is all. Why do you think Dodge continues to make the Viper when they lose money on every car that they build & sell?

People who buy these don’t care about money. At all. So money is no factor here – I can pretty much figure a 95% take rate from trust fund babies. If you work, or have ever worked, one of these seems pointless, but if you had unlimited money – why not?

The guy who’s the owner of the company I work for and I see on occasion is literally a billionaire, that’s with a “B” and guess what he drives? A Buick – no effin joke!

Raineman. True about rich business owners being stingy. Except on whatever their passion is. Then, the sky is the limit. That is why rich car nuts have warehouses full of cars because that is their passion.

If you see a car as nothing more than an appliance to get from one place to another it would seem pointless to spend more than what a Buick costs.

But, if you love cars and have motor oil for blood, you indulge your passion.

If I had the money I would have a collection of the supercars of my youth and a few of the latest and greatest hypercars of today.

No mention of the 1980’s 288 GTO. I think it’s great they’re making one of these but hopefully the styling will be differentiated from the 599 and 599XX the same way Pininfarina did with the 308 GTB.

I am all for the upcoming turbocharged Ferraris but if their appearance means the end of the big V12’s and flat-12’s I am glad they are going ahead with this GTO and hopefully a few other special editions.

Kingston; this car is NOT pointless. is 700 hp excessive? oh god yes, but that makes it impractical… not pointless. but maybe the point is to be impractical, outrageous, and above all else EXCITING!! For Ferrari it portrays an image of power, beauty, and elitism. I’m actually a little surprised you’re a member of an auto enthusiast website if you dont understand the point of such a car.

@ Hyperion: True THAT with the 288GTO! One of my favorite cars of all time. I still have the die cast model of it from when I was a kid. I don’t have kids now, but I imagine that if I did, they’d have a die cast model of the 599GTO

As far as buying one of these things go.. I doubt that anyone on this blog has the money to buy one! And, who cares if you know it exsists? What good does it do for you if you will never drive one or even see one in person?

kingston,
You missed the point, again.
It doesn’t matter if all of us together couldn’t buy it, it’s purely irrelevant.
Besides, Earth would be boring if everything had a a point you agree on, because in fact, this thing has a point, maybe not your kind of point, maybe not many’s, but it has, and it’s a fun and exclusive point.
