Ferrari to take on Lamborghini with four-wheel-drive

10/19/2005, 8:29 AM

Ferrari may be ready to break with tradition by adding a four-wheel-drive system for future sports cars, according to Autocar. The Italian company has filed patent drawings for a part-time 4×4 system, which could be used on front-engined models such as the 612 Scaglietti and the forthcoming V12-powered 600, as well as Maserati’s Quattroporte and Coupé. The setup also combines all-wheel drive and a transaxle layout for the first time in a Ferrari. The system will not be an Audi quattro-style, full-time 4×4; instead. Ferrari’s longtime Italian competitor, Lamborghini has long used a similar system.
