Ferrari to use Fiat 500s as customer courtesy cars

07/17/2008, 8:46 AM

By paulee

Fiat-owned exotic carmaker Ferrari has ordered 200 Fiat 500s for its U.K. dealerships to act as courtesy cars Ferrari owner will take home when their hundred thousand-dollar Italian supercars are being serviced. Exactly 30 percent — 60 cars — will be unique, Ferrari-spec editions not available for purchase by the public.

The Fiat 500 is another small car with style and styling meant to mimic a car of the same name from the manufacturers’ past, in similar vein to the Mini. The 60 special editions will be based on the Fiat 500 Sport, which packs a 1.4-liter inline-4 good for 100hp, and will be painted in Ferrari red paint and sport a specially tuned exhaust sound, according to Autocar reports.

These cars will be equipped with climate control, an electric sunroof, a leather interior and a numbered serial plate on the dash.

Nothing agsint the 500 because I think it’s certainly very cool and chic, but having seen the Alfa 8C, somehow, I would feel robbed if Ferrari handed me a 500 to take home when my F430 or 599 GTB were getting serviced. I bring in my exotic and you’re going to hand me a super-mini?

this seems a little demoralizing, although i’ve always loved the 500 not a bad car to zip around in.

This is normal. Most of folks who own Ferrari in Europe do not drive them 7 days a week – weekend car (new or used). I bet the FIAT 500 is more comfortable and if it’s anything like MIni you can have almost the same amount of fun for a small fraction of the price.

True dat. Ferrari owners have other cars in their garage. And with the reliability of Ferrari, they are in the shop pretty often for the small amount they are driven. But hand me the keys to a little s h i t car? No thanks. When I would bring in my Infiniti FX for service, they would give me a G35 for a loaner. Not a Versa.

What’s really funny is that the last two times one of my coworkers took his Saturn in for service, he got a Prius and a Sebring as loaners.

It is pretty weird but most of the dealers out there don’t give you the same thing as a loaner. Plus the 500 is pretty sweet even for a ferarri owner. its a different type of fun.
