Ferrari unveiled its FXX Evoluzione over the weekend at an event in Italy. As the name suggests, the FXX Evoluzione is an evolution of the FXX program first launched in 2005. The new car was developed with Michael Schumacher and about 20 Client Test Drivers — insider talk for Ferrari FXX owners.
Changes to the FXX Evoluzione includes modifications to aerodynamics, running gear and electronics. Output for the FXX’s V12 engine now totals a staggering 860 horsepower and its redline has been raised to 9,500 rpm. Shift times are down 20 milliseconds — now taking just 60 milliseconds — and the car’s traction control system has been tuned to be less intrusive and features nine settings that can be adjusted on the fly. The FXX Evoluzione’s brakes are made of a Composite Ceramic Material and are supplied by Brembo.
The FXX Evoluzione’s exterior has been slightly altered to promote better aerodynamics — including a new rear diffuser — and is 25% more efficient than the previous car.
The changes result in a 1 minute 16 second lap time of the Fiorano race track — a two second improvement over the standard FXX.
Like the previous FXX program, the cars will be showcased in a series of races held in North America, Europe and Asia.

Looking at that car makes me wonder if Ferrari will be developing the Mach 5 for the upcoming Speed Racer movie.

I love the car, though the white on the exterior is a bit tacky (a la Maserati MC-12). I would have preferred carbon fiber in the raw (can you ever have enough?)
The whole “client test driver” is tiresome marketing speak that undoubtedly draws laughs from the Ferrari engineer insiders. Exactly what input from a 65 year-old self-made millionaire would be beneficial to Ferrari’s team of professional engineers in designing one of the most sophisticated automobiles in the world? Schumacher himself is vulnerable to this criticism–sure he can talk about driving dynamics and the like, but again, are his insights that much better than Ferrari’s test drivers.
Is Ferrari only selling the Evoluzione to those who already have FXX’s? If so, what do they do with their FXX’s?
Ferrari’s already hinted or said that the next streetlegal supercar (”F60″) will be based on a V-8, right? If so, where is Ferrari going with all of this development of the V-12? Formula 1 doesn’t use it, I know the 430 is raced, but I don’t think there are any other V-12 based road cars being raced. Where are they going with this?

Wonder how long it will take to see one of these on WreckedExotics??
This thing is so wicked. Have you noticed how Ferrari is making their premier vehicle ever closer to simply being an F1 car? They might as well have a version named Schumacher.
Wonder what kind of time this would pull down at the Nurburgring in the hands of an F1 driver?

The figures are somewhat anal. 20 milliseconds less shifting times? Even Schumacher won’t notice that.
Very, very, very, very impressive, but a lack of heart and soul. I would still have a Ferrari from the 60’s. It’s a decision of the head to buy this, but one of the heart to get an old Testarossa or something.
Instead of getting an Enzo and working upwards from there, stripping off weight etc, they should get something really, really light, such as an F40, and fit in the better gearbox, drivetrain etc, while tuning up the V8. Or they could detune one of their F1 engines. That would be something.
Bugatti and Koeniggsegg smashed the 400 kph barrier, now it’s time for Ferrari to prove their worth. 500kph machine from the Scuderia Ferrari? Yes please.

For the guy who asked about the DSG transmission ya they shift really fast but they cant handle 860 HP otherwise the new R8 would have one and so would the RS4 and other high end Audi’s and VW’s.

Got to agree with Aston on this one. There’s nothing like a 1960’s Ferrari. This Evoluzione is very cool and most likely stupid fast but it lacks the personality cars like the 365 GTB/4, 250 California, 410 Super America and others had. Ferrari does need to step it up and try to compete with the Veyron and CCX. Also, I don’t care what Ferrari does with its V-12. It is just plain cool.

Scarface – I think you answered your own question… This car isn’t raced. It’s a race inspired vehicle for the billionaire enthusiasts. Some of these enthusiasts do actually race and may be part of pro racing to some degree. To purchase an Enzo or FXX, there are heavy stipulations to be met. They need to know the execs, have a history of purchasing Ferraris, etc… So the client test drivers probably had some decent feedback, most likely in the traction control system. What race car has traction control?
I have to be honest though about this car. I’ve always admired the Enzo and FXX, but they just aren’t as exciting to me as a 599. This car resembles too closely an actual F1 or LeMans race car. They have functional beauty as apposed to artistic beauty. The 599 is a beautiful car with much less ‘form follows function’ design.

Do any of you even read these articles?
If you did you’d know that FXX is not a road car. It is a “track car,” which is basically to say that it is a race car. Hence the last line in the article: “Like the previous FXX program, the cars will be showcased in a series of races held in North America, Europe and Asia.”
So that answers any questions about the market for this car. It basically appeals to super-rich people that want to compete in a control-spec Ferrari FXX GT series.
What race car has traction control? As of the last couple years, pretty much all Formula 1 cars have had traction control (Although it’s supposed to be gone next year)
And I have a final question, is this actually a brand new car, or is this what all of the original FXXs now are after the two or so years of tweaking during “Client Testing”?

Almost every car this side of nascar uses a form of traction control. Doesnt matter what the thoughts are about TC systems, they make cars faster in and out of the corners , even the R10 sportscar uses TC to keep the car on the road. As for the “63 year old” drivers, most of the owners are actually under that age with family money and have semi-pro drivers that run the cars as sponsored drivers in some events. And most of these guys, including the old guys, have had MANY sessions behind the wheel in driver/racing instructive courses.

I think Piablo’s right about the “input” of a client test driver–it’s probably limited to traction control, althoughI still doubt that any non-professional race car driver/engineer has anything valuable to offer Ferrari’s professional engineers re traction control. The other tweaks the article mentioned (aerodynamics and engine improvements) are certainly are well beyond the knowledge of rich drivers.
My point about the point of this car is that I still don’t get the point (everyone follow?). It’s not street legal, it can only be used at Ferrari-sanctioned events (at least until the lease runs out?….), and neither the car, nor engine, is campaigned in any other racing event. It just seems like all of engine work (I’m sure a huge investment) will just dead end as soon as the F60 (or whatever it will be called) comes out, which won’t have a V-12. Maybe work on the traction control and aerodynamics will find their way into the F60….

obviously the car is a big improvement over the original FXX because a 2 second difference around a track is huge.
20 milliseconds obviously doesnt seem like a lot, but it obviously all adds up around a track especially coupled with a 25% efficiency improvement.
i just want to hear one! nothing like a raw Ferrari sounding engine

You can get better race cars for less. Modified Ariel Atoms spring to mind.

I very much doubt an ariel atom can be modified to be faster. This is way ahead of the Enzo in terms to on track performance and the Enzo is faster around the track than the Ariel.
One of the big differences is going to be in the aero department. This allows very good stability at high speeds and keeps it glued to the corners, especially high speed sweepers. An atom may be faster around an autocross course but not any of the major racetracks.
If someone can point out some lap times to prove me wrong I would love to see them. I always appreciate seriously fast cars.
BTW any specs on how much the new FXX weighs?
