The standard wait time for a new Ferrari has crept past the two year mark, according to a new report in the Wall Street Journal. In some cases, that figure is as high as three years.
Even with output at an all-time-high of 5,700 cars in 2006, supply can’t match demand. A few years ago, chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo famously said Ferrari would never sell more than 5,000 cars a year. The company has since passed that milestone, but it has done nothing to meet the increase in demand from the Middle East and Asia.
As Ferrari dealer Michael Mastrangelo explained to the Journal, by the time a customer receives his or her car, a new or updated model has already been introduced — a frustrating scenario to say the least. Mastrangelo said his customers wait an average of three years. And when those cars do arrive, a price above MSRP is a safe bet.
“It’s very hard to come into a dealership right now and put in a new order if you are not already a customer,” Mastrangelo said. “When I get a young person, what I say is, let’s start with a used car.”

This is why they need to bring Alfa back to the States. For each one of these people on the list there are probably many more who went to the competition. At the very least give a potential buyer an alternative. Even though they’ll probably make less on each sale, they will sell more cars, and overall make more money.
Otherwise, just go to a pure bidder auction system. This quarter they’ll sell X cars, take sealed bids, and the highest bidders get keys to a shiny new Ferrari. Milk’em for all they got.

Yes, its annoying to wait 24 months for a car. Yes, you can get a 911 or a Z06 that will keep up with (or even pass) an F430. BUT, there’s nothing that is as much fun as an F430 driven in anger on the track. F430’s come from the factory perfectly set up and they’re sheer magic. You don’t have to change a thing. R-Compound rubber doesn’t hurt, but that’s about it. I’ve driven the competition, and while fantastic, its just not the same. The only reason to buy one is if you intend to drive it hard. Don’t waste your money otherwise.

What’s the complaining and sympathy all about?? Boo hoo. It must be terrible to wait 24 months or 3 years for the most sought after vehicle in the world! Sarcasm intended. I have zero sympathy for anyone who has that kind of money and has to wait to purchase a machine like a 599 Fioranno. I’d wait many more. Currently I’ll be waiting 30 years for the day I might be able to afford one.
FYI, there’s a waiting list of 3 years because of their business model. It’s a good thing. Humans love to get in line. This waiting list is intended and by design. That is what makes Ferrari so desirable. When someone has more money than they know what to do with, they look for things that no one else has or can obtain.

I just don’t get it, like Veda said, there are way more exotics to choose from now-a-days. I totally like Ferraris and have since I was a kid but even if I had that kind of money I couldn’t wait more than 8 months to buy a car like that. Give me a Saleen S7 twin turbo!

_________________hey Pedro Miguel, the waiting list for Lamborghini is jsut as bad if not worse. they do it on purpose so that to preserve the rariry and elegance of the brand. im very sure that ferrari could produce F430’s and 599’s day by day but they dont and like piablo said its all about the brand and its desirability.

Job security -that would also make Ferrari the best place to work in Italy. What an ego boost it must be for Ferrari. All those people –people who typically are not accustomed to having to wait– are willingly waiting 2-3 years for their product. I hope they keep production numbers low for their sake. I know a guy that just received his blue 599 in December. The car is just a work of art -mechanically and visually. Bested, in my opinion, only by his Enzo, which really isn’t in the same category. Ferrari is awesome.

I think driving a Ferrari would be exciting no matter now exclusive the market for them is. They’re very fast, very capable handlers and they have a near century long racing history.
With or without a waiting list and $100k+++++ pricetag, I think anyone would appreciate they’re driving a masterpiece of engineering and design.
You can have a similar driving experience without a Ferrari, of course, but they are that good even without the hype.

Not being sarcastic, Ken. They are not built around reliability. I respect the sporting qualities of a Ferrari, but they are still built like ****. A freakin Honda Fit could do far far more laptops around the Nurburgring at full throttle than a Ferrari, but not as fast. As others pointed out above, there are just as sporting cars out there by other makes, but they dont have a stupid horse on them. I don’t question Ferrari’s business model because it works, and if I could sell **** to folk with too much cash I would also. Insecurity is a great thing to exploit, and rich pussies suffer from it as much as poor pussies.

hey i agree with the dealer, if youre new money then just hop into a used model there generally as well maintained and come smelling like a new one anyway if you just need to get you feet ferrari wet.
everything is more about the emotion involved in the product.
and everything has a equally functioning cheeper more readily available counterpart
but for those that care, the competition is just not the real thing.
you can get a sony or samsung plasma screen with 1080p or you can get a insignia lcd with 1080p which will definitely be cheeper and have a slightly compareable display but its not the sony or sam
ipod or zune
things made in china or things made here lol
every thing has a sub par equal (and that last one was ment to be a joke i dont want any gm jokes coming back at me)

point is the good things in life are worth the wait. and until then if you got the dough have some fun with something else until it arrives. theres plenty of supercar selection out there for those that are looking.
I WOULD BE HAPPY TO WAIT
it would make the experience that much better knowing when i pull up to my jealous friend he couldnt 1 up me by running to the dealer

I respect Ferrari for its racing heritage. Its sole existence is for performance. That is lost on most car companies these days. TVR (may it rest in peace) was one. Even Porsche cratered and created an SUV (albeit a great one). Every car that Ferrari makes handles well and you can count on one hand the number of cars they’ve produced that didn’t immediately turn heads. IMO, just based on the performance, a Ferrari (or cars like it) should be every car enthusiast’s goal. Of course on this sight, any car that gets less than 30 mpg or doesn’t have a 1000lb battery bank is taboo. If you drive one or even aspire to buy one you should feel guilty right? Sorry, I don’t. Speaking of…
–Veda, you should dedicate the time you spend online to feeding homeless crack addicts. What a dumb comment.

I just find it interesting that of my acquaintences who own Ferrari and/or Lamborghini, that when we go on our weekly drives or track days that the Lamborghinis are usually in the shop and the Ferraris almost are always there. Even my friends 1st generation Testarossa…considered to be the least reliable Ferrari of all time. I have yet to see him bring the Lambo as it is ALWAYS in the shop. By the way, Lamborghini was created by a tractor maker who was swore that he could make a more reliable car than the other marques of the time, but has still failed to do so. Ask any skilled Bosch mechanic and he will verify this. I still want a Lambo to add to my collection, but mainly as a high-end cruiser.

Lamborghini Countachs are cool looking cars and so are Espadas. I think Lamborghini’s exterior designs have until recently rivaled Ferrari in a more conservative way.
As to which company makes better supercars for the track, I’d still say Ferrari.
