Ferrari reveals retro-styled Monza SP1, SP2

The single-seat SP1 and passenger-friendly SP2 are both powered by Ferrari's most powerful engine ever.

Ferrari has revealed its latest ultra-exclusive special editions, the Monza SP1 and SP2.

The duo inaugurates a new series labeled Icona, drawing inspiration from some of Ferrari's most iconic cars of the '50s.

With a fully open cockpit and no windshield, the Monza aims to evoke the 1948 166 MM and subsequent 'barchetta' racers such as the 750 Monza and 860 Monza.

The SP1 is the more radical design with a single seat for the driver alone, while the SP2 adds a second protective screen and roll bar to welcome aboard another brave soul.

Designers blended the retro styling from the classic cars with the Prancing Horse's modern aesthetic. Despite the throwback looks, both cars benefit from modern supercar technology including lightweight carbon fiber.

Engineers pushed the envelope when tweaking the Monzas' V12, cranking it up to 809 horsepower and 539 pound-feet of torque -- Ferrari's most powerful engine ever. Drivers can expect to launch from zero to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds, then arrive at 124 mph in 7.9 seconds.

To enhance the experience without putting a piece of glass in front of the driver, Ferrari developed a "virtual" windscreen that funnels air upward vertically ahead of the instrument panel to block straight-line winds as the car carves through the air.

Ferrari only plans to build 500 units, each presumably fetching a significant premium.
