Fiat unveils commemorative Abarth 500 “DA 0 A 100″

11/14/2008, 12:10 PM

By Drew Johnson

The Fiat 500 is one model we hope eventually makes it to the U.S., but while we continue to wait on this side of the pond, Europeans will get yet another crack at an Abarth-tuned 500. The latest model from the Italian tuner is called the “DA 0 A 100″ (from 0 to 100) and was created to commemorate what would have been the 100th birthday of Abarth founded Karl Abarth.

The Fiat 500 “DA 0 A 100″ comes packing a turbocharged 1.4L engine, producing a healthy 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough juice to squirt the “DA 0 A 100″ from 0-60 in 7.3 seconds.

The “DA 0 A 100″ will also see a marked improvement in overall performance compared to the standard 500, thanks to a set of lowering springs, performance brakes and size 205 Pirelli Pzero Nero tires.

The special edition 500 will only be available in Nuvolari Grey, complete with an Abarth racing stripe, Abarth badging and quad exhaust outlets.

Only 101 examples of the “DA 0 A 100″ will be produced, with deliveries expected to start shortly.

What made them decide to make 101 instead of just 100? Wouldn’t 100 make sense as a number, since it’s celebrating 100th birthday of Señor Abarth? The first one should be #1 in the series, not #0. But I guess that’s how Abarth would have done it…

Probably in honor of that famous Italian car movie, “101 DA-mations”.

beatusmongous,

It is tradition in Europe to put one extra candle on a birthday cake for the next happy year. Also, when you present flowers to a bday girl you buy one extra. I reckon same reasoning drives 101 vs 100 for 100th bday.

HoosierHero,
Yaris no, but Aygo maybe.

Borat, thanks for clearing that up. I understand now. That’s actually kind of cool with the extra candle to wish for another good year.

Although I’ve always kind of hated birthdays. A comedian once said that it’s kind of silly to celebrate someone who’s greatest accomplishment was simply living one more year.

VWgrouP, I bet with it being a 1.4 T it must still post some impressive mpg for a car that small.

I’m sure it gives enough room for modders to squeeze out more than the 160bhp for something truly unique :P

I get that theyre honouring Abarth and the “Da” and “a” parts come from Italian, but the name is just GAY.

Scene at a bar:

Owner: Ohh thats just my “DA 0 A 100″
Friend: …fgsfds…
