Fiat, Chery to produce 175,000 cars in China

08/07/2007, 2:41 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Fiat and Chery officially announced a joint partnership today that will see the Chinese automaker producing 175,000 Fiat and Alfa Romeo vehicles in China in addition to 100,000 Fiat motors. This comes after last week’s rumor that the two automakers would partner. It’s expected that most of the vehicles would be for the Chinese market, which Fiat has already entered with Nanjing Automobile.

It’s not known just where the rest of the vehicles will wind up, but other Asian markets are by far the most likely possibility. Fiat’s partnership with Nanjing deteriorated when the Chinese company fell short on its pledged investment, according to Fiat’s CEO, Sergio Marchionne.

It’s also not known just which Fiat and Alfa Romeo vehicles will be produced in China.

Built that Maserati GranTurismo engine in China and lower the price even more. The engine sucks anyway, unreliability won’t hurt. It’s all about image and style…

R-head – You seem to think that anything built by Asian people is high quality. Have you seen Chinese cars lately? They are completely plagerized and look as if they were built in collabotition with the USSR.

Are you Italian? I am when have you driven an Italian car.. unless of course you’ve had a Ferrari or Lamborghini that you were unhappy with.

Commodore, the gist of my post was that italian car quality is so poor that even chinese car quality is an improvement.

When did I drive an italian car? My girlfriend in Germany had a Fiat. Don’t get me wrong – I thought it was cooler than any comparable kraut car – but qualitatively it was still a heap of crap, even compared to all the fine german heaps of crap in the fleet I managed.

I don’t think that anything made by asians is better. I had a bad experience with a Honda Accord (model made in Jpn) and it would be tough to trust it again, especially since my experience with Fords and GMs is better. Just as I don’t buy the BS hype that asian quality is superior, I also don’t buy the BS hype that americans can’t build a car right, not do I buy the BS hype that european cars are fine, luxurious, or higher quality. All elements of that statement are obvious it you review regular stats, and my experience clearly is opposed to the hype.

Whether you are italian or not is irrelevant. I read enough anti-american s.h.i.t on this site in one day to last a lifetime, so try growing one hairy italian nad and deal with a little yourself. Just like the germans, italians engineer nice vehicles to drive, but neither seem to produce a personal vehicle capable of lasting too long without a buttload of maintenance at a high price. Some people consider that “the price you pay to play.” I consider it “the price to pay to plug your inferiority complex.”

BTW, even though I think it is likely of questionable quality, I would probably buy that new Cinquecento as a commuter car if they offer it here in a budget format. Even if it is a POS, it is not as big a POS as a gay crappy Mini, and is very likely better than a Polo (not here anyway), plus Yaris’s and Fits are lame, and Mazda is not bringing the 2 the last I heard. Plus if priced right the Fiat has style that far outweighs its probable mechanical deficiencies.

The Chinese would have to take a VERY long time, and HUGE strides to get my money in the automotive world, and I mean huge strides.

Damnit, it angers me so much when they literally COPY the frickin name of Rover, plain in front of everyone, and even have similar badge traits (same color, same layout, just different picture). It angers me when I see products on the shelves that although are less expensive, are direct copies from ones that came before it, only they had better quality.

It’s hard enough not to buy Chinese crap anymore. Not to be racist, but of course I have my right to be angered.

RicardoHead’s post nailed the topic. Every brand and model has different strengths and weaknesses regardless of whether it’s style or engineering, if the guys here can see a car for what it is apart from its badge then we’d be having a far more constructive discussion.

R-head. Ok. Sorry if I offended u or some **** i guess. BTW I’m not Italian, that was a typo. It was supposed to say “I mean, when have you driven Italian?” Also, my uncle lives in Italy and he has a ‘76 Fiat which is still perfect. I just thought you were saying what you said, without any expirience driving Italian or Chinese cars.

Every other car story is about China. It’s like people forgot that they are a communist regime that treats their people like crap and is hostile towards the West. By all means, let’s do business with them!

If you tally up the stories on the LLN homepage, 20 out of 16 have nothing to do with specific models coming out – it’s strictly about the buying and selling of percentages of companies, outsourcing of assembly and design, and regulations-related stuff.

It wasn’t like this 8 months ago. There’s a clear bias toward this sort of **** on LLN these days.

Frank: You’re right, we don’t owe China anything, but out Government is going to bat for its business buddies.
