Fiat considering two commercial vans to replace departing Dodge Sprinter

09/02/2009, 3:06 PM

By Drew Johnson

Just yesterday Mercedes-Benz announced it would be yanking the Sprinter commercial van from Dodge dealers at the start of next year, but Fiat – Chrysler’s new global partner – is already mulling two replacement vehicles to fill the Sprinter’s spot.

According to Automotive News, Fiat is considering the Ducato and Iveco Daily to fill the void left by the Sprinter’s departure. “Chrysler Group, together with Fiat and Iveco, are together analyzing the possibility,” Gualberto Ranieri, senior vice president of communications at Chrysler, said. Iveco, a commercial truck maker, is owned by Fiat.

However, if given the go ahead, the new commercial vehicles would likely be sold under a new Dodge truck brand. Whatever the case, the vans would not wear the Fiat badge.

The Iveco Daily appears to be the frontrunner to replace the Sprinter as it is similar in size to the Mercedes-made van. The Fiat Ducato is a smaller vehicle than the Daily.

However, it remains possible that Fiat could bring both models to America. The Daily would logically fill the role of the outgoing Sprinter while the Ducato would give Chrysler a smaller offering to answer Ford’s hot-selling Transit Connect.

Well, ummmm????? i don’t know what to say to this. They better redesign the headlights in the process of creating a U.S. model.

The daily is actually much more attractive. It is very aggressive looking and has a four door flat bed style that looks fun.

Yup, saw this coming a mile away. I said it in the other article, they didn’t want the Sprinter anymore either, they want their own product to sell – not Daimler’s.

Great! Show those Daimler and MB d-bags that the Chrysler group it still kicking and not going down. It is MB’s loss because IMO Dodge sold more Sprinters than MB’s…MB’s…what do they call it? Get them here soon.

Chuck? What was that? Daimler owns MB if you don’t know. Its not the MB douches, it Daimler. The call it the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

^^iluvamcars: I know that Daimler owns MB, but they all had a part in turning the Chrysler Group into what it is today (including Chrysler themselves). The article also clearly states that MB is yanking it from Dodge and I am sure that the bosses at Daimler looking in on MB are nodding in approval.

Is it wrong that I find these conversations on commercial vans more rewarding than the two Lexus articles which appeared earlier today?

And I say bring both of these vans over. The small one to compete with the Transit Connect which is going to be a winner and the big one just to say f*ck you Daimler.

^^johnnyc: Do not mean to go off on a tangent from this article, but It took 4 articles for Lexus to get 64 comments. Hyundai has one article: 51 comments. What does that say about Lexus? Or mostly importantly what does that say about Hyundai? Again do not mean to go off on a tangent from this article. It was just a thought.

I’m pretty sure Mercedes will still the sell the hugely succesful Sprinter vans here… I even heard a rumor they would start to build them here.

My friend has a nice one and had all the Dodge emblems replaced with Benz stuff. Even the wheels are nice Benz alloys.

He was pulled over and the cop was very puzzled why the registration said Dodge but he was clearly looking at a Benz.

My friend just said he had returned the car to its rightful designation.

Actually the Ducato, Daily and Sprinter are pretty close in dimensions and engine offerings. To compare the Ducato with the Transit Connect is like comparing apples with oranges, the Connect is a lot smaller. The Ducato is comparable with the standard Transit which is a lot bigger than the Connect.

I´ve driven the Ducato recently, a camper conversion to be exact, and I could barely fit inside. Mind you, I´m 6´4″, but it was a PITA sitting in the drivers chair (seat all the way back and it was tight for my legs). I guess it´s not designed for taller people. I´ve driven the 120 hp version with the 5 speed manual. Could need a 6th gear for lower revs at speeds above 100 km/h (62 mp/h). For short trips it is decent and overall I liked it.

Renton, I dunno if Benz will sell those in droves. Yes, fleets will buy them, as we all know large corporations are whores, and purchasing manager will trade integrity on good price for MB for himself. But Joe the plumber, will remember what was done to his neighbor Mike, the mechanic, and will buy Iveco. Which is not better or worse then Benz Gestapo Wagon. I am with Johnny: f*ck Benz with a baseball bat!

One of the many bad things that Daimler did to Chrysler was to force them to kill the Ram Van to make room for the overpriced, slow-selling and unprofitable (for Chrysler) Sprinter. I say they should create a competitor to the Econoline/Savanna out of the current Ram’s parts bin!

Borat,

Those vans work. Well.

…and get good mileage.

It is a pretty impressive and proven package. IMHO

Yomama… the Sprinter looks like it sells like hotcakes, ive seen infinitely more on the road than I ever saw of the Ram, and Mercedes obviously wants a piece of the pie seeing as how they’ve taken it back.

Some of these euro vans are pretty slick and better gas mileage to boot. I’ve driven a Sprinter it’s actually pretty cool, real comfy seats. In NYC you see them every day no wonder Daimler wants to cancel their contract. Way better than the E-Series I drove for work. I hope the Iveco and Fiats nee Dodge versions will be as good. Sprinters are $40 – 50 large if they can undercut that price they’ll sell in droves.

Fiat ducato to compete with Ford transit connect? as Kris K said, it is comparing apple and oranges. The Fiat Doblo is the competitor of Ford Transit Connect.
Fiat ducato is a bit smaller than IVECO Daily, its maximum weight limit is 3.5t, due to EU regulations for normal driving licenses. If you want to drive a vehicle weighting more than 3.5t loaded, you need to have a new driving license.

Fiat must be quite good for commercial vehicles, they won “Most Improved Van Manufacturer of the Year” in the Fleet Van Awards for 2009. Never driven one of them and I’m not likely to, but I’d imagine they’re pretty good if they’re half as good as the ordinary Fiat cars.
