I can understand why you may feel like that on one level, but on another level why would it give anyone joy to see the company fail?
I drive a Cobalt. I think its a good cat, not best in class, but good nonetheless. I won’t buy a car I don’t like just because its American. I test drove a bunch of compacts, the Corolla being one of them (awful car) and the only car I liked to drive better than the Balt was the Mazda 3, and at the time supplies were low.
GM has been coming out with some very nice vehicles lately-Travers, Equinox, Malibu, CTS, SRX, Enclave, LaCrosse with more good stuff in the pipeline.
GM is remaking itself and the Govmnt will be paid off sooner than expected.
Give the new GM a chance to change perception and leave the old GM behind.

who knows the update may be enough to be OK until 2012 for fleet sales?

I think Fiat is doing the right thing by keeping the Sebring and Avenger around until they can get new models. Who cares if it is only rental companies buying them. At least it translates into money coming in.

There obligation was to make a product that competes with the other manufactures, they failed for years.
Gettin better, but will take more time.
They did it to themselves, making suv’s and pickups when the imports were developing products for the future.
And please do not remind me about Toyota quality or some of the mistakes the imports made.

I would hope that Fiat is going to let most of Chrysler’s lineup die… and replace them with Fiat designed, Fiat branded, FIATs.

…and in other unrelated news, Fiat has announced that it has changed its plans to cancel production of their Avenger and Sebring models.

…and this just coming in through the foreign wire; Fiat has just announced that it will no longer discontinue or continue production of its Avenger and Sebring models but will instead redesign each model before canceling production, or perhaps continuing production at a further unannounced date.

If they had ALL done it right in the first place, the former BIG THREE would maybe still be the BIG THREE.

Also if the recession had gone a little longer “they would have considered handouts”.
No one will ever know, much like everthing collapsing if the goverment did not implement the bailouts.

They needed cash on hand immediately so they would go into bankruptcy then. The ONLY reason why they did not get government handouts this time around was because they still had some left over cash from the loans 3 years ago.

IF Ford had done it right in the first place, they would NOT have needed loans to begin with. Had the recession gone a little longer, Ford even said they would consider taking handouts.

That would prevent the future bailouts Chrysler will inevitably need while creating an empty space in the market which would be occupied mostly by Ford and GM, due to their similar lineups (full of trucks, SUVs and large sedans) and for sharing the same “buy american” appeal.

GM could benefit even more, by incorporating all the technologies of the dying company. All that would surely save much more jobs in the long term.
