Fiat to premiere 500 Abarth in Tokyo

07/09/2007, 1:19 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Fiat has chosen the Tokyo Motor Show in October, rather than January’s Geneva show. Full details on the hottest 500 aren’t known, but we’re expecting the 1.4 liter turbo from Fiat’s Panda in either 120 or 150 horsepower variants. It’s also expected that the Fiat 500 Abarth will eventually make it to the United States and Canada, a market that hasn’t seen the Fiat name in 25 years.

Abarth, a longtime performance name associated with Fiat, is designed to become Fiat’s performance arm. An Abarth version of the 500 has been expected since the “nuova Cincquecento” was announced, but the expected convertible hasn’t been officially announced yet.

It would be awesome to see that car here. I can see the women (18-35) who drive Minis and the Merc C230 sport coupe flocking to this car.

This car only weighs ~2100 lbs. 150 HP will make it an absolute hoot to drive, and it will probably get decent fuel mileage

Too bad it’s not RR like the old 500, that would have been an absolute riot. Hopefully it can at least give the new Mini a run for its money in the handling department.
