The Bugatti Veyron has already solidified itself as one of the world’s most expensive sports cars with a price tag in excess of $1 million, but the recent Gooding & Company auction proves that less can sometimes be more – even in the case of exotic sports cars.
Case in point: Remove the top of a Veyron and its price more than doubles.
Gooding & Company auctioned off the rights to own the first Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport – the recently unveiled open-air version of the Veyron – for a whopping $2.9 million. Add in the 10 percent auction premium and Grand Sport #1 rolled off the auction block for a cool $3.19 million.
In addition to just owning the first Grand Sport on the block – which would likely be the case no matter which number chassis ended up in the buyer’s garage – the winning bidder will work with Bugatti during every stage of the production process to ensure the car is tailored to their exact specifications.
Perhaps General Motors should consider auctioning off a Corvette ZR1 Grand Sport to cover the cost of next year’s GM Style event…
