The first ever 2008 Dodge Challenger has been won at auction for $400,000. Perhaps even more amazing, the first Corvette ZR1 fetched $1,000,000. Both cars were auctioned at Barrett-Jackson this weekend, with funds going to the notMYkid and United Way charitable organizations, respectively.
The first production Dodge Challenger has not even been built yet, but that should happen shortly after the car is officially unveiled in three weeks at the Chicago Auto Show. The $400,000 figure dwarfs the expected MSRP of $37,995 for the SRT8 model. A plaque will firmly identify the car as number one.
Meanwhile, the first salable ZR1 has already been built and will go to collector Dave Ressler immediately. The million-dollar price tag is roughly ten times what a ZR1 will retail for. The ZR1 is the most powerful Corvette ever, delivering 620 horsepower. Ressler’s car is painted Le Mans blue.

I think I might agree. We’ll have to see.
But what comes after should be, this one hopes, even more amazing.

Same people pay millions too much for yachts and oceanfront property too…whats $400k to them. Its like most people paying 10 bucks too much for bad sports seats. The only difference is they have #1 of very few made, and thats priceless! Good for them.

People have more money than they know what to do with. Why not just wait until the car comes out? Guess that’s not exclusive enough.

If I had the money, I’d write the $400,000 check, hand it over, let them sell the auto Challenger to some other idiot for more money, and buy a real car.

Barrett-Jackson has become a pimp for anything from the big 3 muscle-car era. They’re getting 100 large for former 318 Barracudas just because some genius dropped a hemi into the engine bay. So, congratulations America (and I include Canadians in the mix), despite any thoughts of an impending recession or sub-prime mortgage crisis there’s obviously still plenty enough of you with gratuitous amounts of disposable income.
I must admit however, I really don’t understand the lure for those who buy collector cars purely as an investment. At the high end of the game (low miles, matching numbers, one of a very limited production number etc…)-maybe. At the low to middle end I’d much rather take my chances in real estate. The funniest part is most of the cars purchased are unlikely to even get driven for fear of depreciation due to any number of concerns.
Which brings me to the ‘life’s too short’ perspective. For a quarter, or a half, or even a tenth of what these sheet metal speculators are paying to put something in their garage that may not see asphalt again until the next auction, there are any number of cars you can buy at the auto mall today that will run rings around them.
I know; I just don’t get it. Autonut keeps repeating the mantra ‘I’d rather drive a slow car fast than drive a fast car slow. I’d rather just be driving.

Hey Johnnyslapshot …
That’s what makes America great – freedom to buy whatever you want at whatever price you can afford. Nobody’s hurting anybody here. If you’ve got the money, spend it any way you want.

CA36GTP,
A 5-speed is perfectly adequate for performance. The sixth gear is an economy gear. So technically it isn’t needed.

The money goes to children’s charities but I am not sure if it is a tax deduction, but it should be the approximate retail value minus what they paid for the car at auction.

The funny part about the vette is he had the car won at $900k and bumped his own bid to 1 million. Just goes to show that its only money to some people. What the article forgets to mention in the 10% buyers premium on all cars from the auction. So in the end he paid 1.1 million.
Not that it really makes a difference but he also gets to tour the corvette build facility, be the first one to start the car and he can take delivery of it at jay leno’s car facility if he wants
Also, the amount paid over the MSRP of the car is the amount that is tax deductible.

how do some of you not see this as a win-win situation? kids in need get help and guys with lots of money get bad a–, fast as s—, #1 cars and get to help kids in need.
maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see a negative side to this.
