After the Pebble Beach incident I can understand why the VAG bosses would decline any event where they cannot be in complete control. Their humiliation did however prompt the entire overhall of the Veyron which ultimatly produced this much improved version. The question begs, why would Bugatti want to chance a head to head with Pagani or Koenigsegg when all of the car magazines are singing its praises? They have everything to lose and nothing to gain seeing that they are percieved as being the hands down best. This is perhaps the reason that McClaren would not supply an F1 to Bugatti when they wanted to move into to "Fastest car in the world" spotlight.
I believe that these cars were targeted toward different demographic and/or philosophical groups. The Bugatti towards men with only average high speed driving abilities and with extreme luxury as a top priority. The Koenisegg towards men with great driving skills and spartan tastes.
I would like to close by saying that; saying that something is so doesn't mean that it is so and that Bugatti will run into many more problems chasing after that 274mph goal.

Marcel,
Yes, I've read in a reliable car mag that Bugatti is intending to produce a clubsport version of the Veyron with over 200 BHP more.
I note with interest that Bugatti decline to supply a car to compete against the Koenigsegg CCX or Pagani Zonda Clubsport etc. on a track, and a lap time for the Nurburgring is also very obviously missing. They may change their mind when the more focussed clubsport version is produced, when they feel confident of making a more emphatic statement.
They are also looking for approval from VAG bosses to produce a saloon using the engine, transmission and four wheel drive underpinnings from the Veyron. Although VAG are very cautious following the huge development costs of the Veyron, it seems likely to go ahead as it will involve relatively little re-engineering, and is likely to sell, as the Veyron is now apparently selling healthily.
I consider the 'fastest car in the world' title to be shared between Koenigsegg and Bugatti, as the Bugatti cannot be driven over 231? mph in normal driving mode. Any use of the brakes will move it out of unrestricted mode and limit it to 231 mph again.

Harry, where did you get your information about the 2007 Veyron and its 250 new ponies? On which track did the testing occur and who did the verification of the terminal speed? Your not just blowing smoke---are you?

Yes the Veyron is far more complcated.... BUT, The Veyron acually handles, it has a rear wing, it is faster off the mark, it is quieter and it IS still for sale.
The CCX comapred the the CCR is a huge difference, not just 150hp, it is longer and wider with a different shape, therefore it is LESS aerodynamic, so yes the 141mph is only now up to 150mph... not 147.
There is also a new Veyron for 2007... it does 274mph due to 250 new ponies and improved aerodynamics... and as i said before, the veyron stays on the track when it goes around a corner at 100mph, its got proper downforce.

All in all.. I'd take the Veyron.

Yeah the veyron has a bit of appeal shearly due to the hype and anticipation. However bugatti doesnt hold an impressive record in the car world. Furthermore with twice as many cylinders than the Koenigsegg and 4 turbos giving the vehicle nearly 200 more brake horsepower than the CCX,s single supercharger its a bit pathetic that the car can only muster up a top speed of 253 mph. And lets not forget that when the top speed run was held at Nardo Mr. Bicocchi didnt top the car out. Im guessing the Koenigsegg is well capable of hitting 260 mph. Finally factoring in the price variances and styling cues of each car, the flashy Koenigsegg (translated means "knife's edge") makes the over the hill Bugatti take a step into the shadows. The CCX is plain and simply the BEST

The Bugatti Veyron is a much more technologically sophisticated machine than the Koenisegg CCX. The Veyron has a "W" 16 cylinder engine with 4 turbochargers, 997bhp, all wheel drive, three suspension modes and 1.7 miles of cable to power the onboard electronics. The entire car is lowered and the front diffuser flaps, rear spoiler and tail wing are deployed above 233 Mph to create the necessary aerodynamics to reach its terminal speed of 253 Mph. It also has a 7 speed direct-shift gearbox, dual clutch system and a paddleshift. All this performance is transferred to the pavement via state of the art Michelin run flat tires and a PAX system for constant tire pressure monitoring, just like formula 1 cars have. I must admit that I just don't get the styling of the Veyron. I would much prefer the styling of the Koenisegg.

Koenisegg CCX
The ultimate car might not be as fast as the bugatti veyron but for the ultimate package and of course look and style wins it!

These are the results of some of the top production cars tested on the Nardo Prototipo track. Keep in mind that this is a cricular track and that this feat was accomplished by a CCR with 806 bhp not a CC8S with 655 bhp.The CCR test was performed on 2/28/05.
With this verification of speed, Christian von Koenigsegg is even more confident that the Koenigsegg CCR is capable of reaching its projected top speed of 395 km/h, or more, in a straight line.

Comparison chart results at Nardo/Prototipo for Production cars:

1. Koenigsegg CCR 388 km/h
2. McLaren F1 372 km/h
3. Ferrari Enzo 355 km/h
4. Porsche Carrera GT 334 km/h
4. McLaren Mercedes SLR 334 km/h
5. Lamborghini Murcielago 330 km/h

I say that the CCR and the CCX are the fastest limited production cars on the planet. Remember folks that the Veyron is not for sale to anyone and neither is the McClaren. The CCX does not have a ford engine. The people at Koenigsegg have cast their own "in house" block in order to meet anti pollution standards here in the US while still maintaining its 806 Bhp. I would like to see skid pad tests and an objective drive test on the CCX.I would also like to see it on a one on one with the latest and greatest street legal Porsche Lamborghini and Ferrari.

Well, I'm pretty sure the Veyron is the nicer one to drive, and even more exclusive. The Veyron is a status, not a statussymbol.

The Koenigsegg is just insane, less refined, less stylish, more brutal.

Aw man. I wonder how this will affect Bugatti's Veyron sales. If it no longer holds the world's fastest car title, will people be as willing to pay the million plus price tag?

Any idea that Porsche doesn't care about straight line performance as an overall benchmark? For $650,000 and more than 800 hp it should EMBARRASS even the Enzo.
