Fisker is planning to have the first mass-produce plug-in hybrid to market in late 2009 in the form of the Karma sedan, and the electric automaker is now one step closer to that goal. FIsker announced on Tuesday that it has contracted Finland’s Valmet Automotive to build the Karma hybrid.
Valmet currently produces the Boxster and Cayman sports cars for Porsche.
The Karma is slated to hit the market in the fourth quarter of 2009 with a price tag of about $80,000. The car’s lithium ion batteries should be good for an electric range of 50 miles, with the car’s internal combustion engine boosting range by another 300 miles. Like the Chevrolet Volt’s drivetrain, the Karma’s gas engine will be used exclusively for charging the car’s battery pack and will not directly aid in propulsion.
Performance and style are the key selling points of the Karma, with a claimed 0-60 time under 6 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph.
