Fisker Automotive has announced a new partnership with BMW that will cover the supply of engines and other automotive components for the next-generation of Fisker cars.

Fisker said on Thursday that it will tap BMW for a four-cylinder turbocharged engine for use in its forthcoming “Project Nina†mid-size premium sedan. The “Project Nina†sedan will be built at a former General Motors plant in Wilmington, Delaware during the end of 2012.

“The BMW engine was an obvious choice for us, as BMW is known for producing the best and most fuel efficient gasoline engines in the world,†said Fisker CEO Henrik Fisker. “We are very pleased to have signed this agreement with BMW.”

Fisker’s contract with BMW is good for up to 100,000 engines per year.

Fisker currently sources the turbocharged 2.0L engine in its Karma sedan from GM, but it remains to be seen if the Karam will also make the switch to BMW power in 2012.
