Fisker unveils Sunset hybrid convertible

01/12/2009, 3:03 PM

By Nick Aziz

California-based Fisker took the wraps off of its all-new Sunset hybrid droptop, a model expected to go on sale at about the same time it offers its four-door Karma sedan. The Sunset convertible is the most production-ready Fisker we’ve seen yet at an auto show, so expect its unveiling to the public to occur in 2010.

About a year ago, Fisker Coachbuild teased members of the press at the J.D. Power Roundtable in San Francisco with an image previewing a Karma-based convertible model. Shortly thereafter, we brought you an exclusive illustration of how the finished car might look – and it appears that our illustration was pretty close to the real thing.

Fisker has said the convertible model would go on sale around the same time as the sedan. That means both models should hit the market in late 2010, according to estimates.

Assuming it has similar specs to the Karma sedan, the Sunset will likely be powered by a Q-Drive plug-in-hybrid drivetrain. The sedan promises to sprint to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, yet deliver 100 miles to the gallon. Both Karma and Sunset should be able to travel for 50 miles on batteries alone, before the General Motors-sourced 2.0-liter gasoline motor has to kick in to generate additional electricity. The powertrain features a pair of 201-horsepower electric motors hooked up to lithium-ion batteries.

Prior to the Karma and Sunset projects, Fisker specialized in building rebodied Mercedes-Benz and BMW cars. Founder Henrik Fisker previously worked as a designer, penning the Aston Martin DB9 and BMW Z8.

Fisker says plans are to sell about 15,000 Karma and Sunset models a year and that the automaker expects to sign up 40 dealers by the end of 2009. With a base price of $87,900 for the Karma, we’d expect the Sunset to price in close to $100,000.

Toyota should hire Fisker and give him carte blanche to de-uglify their models (some Lexus models excepted).

Very nice. Again, if Detroit is the end of the American Automotive industry and this is the beginning, then I’m all for it.

sounds great

but how about making one car first? the karma

before presenting the rest of the line

Wow… so Fisker is doing what Chevy has thus far been unable to.

This is why the Detroit 2.5 are failing.

Any bets that this beats the Volt to market?

I think it’s great that they plan on having another model to compliment the Karma.

And Fisker is doing what Chevy thus far HAS done. Maybe you overlooked the fact that neither the Volt or Karma are in production. Once again, the blind bashing the Big Three.

This looks nice! i doubt it will beat the volt to production when the sedans release date isn’t even known for sure yet

Excuse me… what? The Volt is not in production… in fact the last thing I heard is that GM hasn’t even put out a release date yet. GM has been hyping Camaro for years and years and the first batch of them hasn’t even travelled down the assembly line yet. At this moment Volt is the best hope Chevy has… but production delays and supplier issues keep holding it up.

I mean seriously… how hard is it to take an electric golf-cart and put a small gasoline generator in the trunk to charge the batteries as it goes down the road. It’s going to be really funny when some other car company beats GM to the market with what is essentially their own concept.

I support domestic auto manufacturing… I own two Chevrolets. Mustang is arguably the most popular car ever made, and GM has gotten out some really innovative designs in the past 4 years. The fact that Corvette is still the best bang-for-the-buck sports car on the market speaks volumes about what they are capable of. I simply believe that Ford and GM are both plagued by high legacy costs, top-heavy management and a reliance on 5-10 year old design and technology in many of their mainline vehicles. They sunk millions into large truck and SUV development while letting their car designs stagnate, and we all know they saw the high gas prices coming. I traded my 15MPG truck in for a 25MPG car back in 2005, right as Katrina slammed the gulf… I now fill up with gas once every two weeks… and I’ve never looked back.

RaineMan,

Where have you been? The Volt’s release date was announced ages ago: November 2010.

And once Fisker can actually build and sell a car – not to mention mass-produce them at prices for the mass population – and do so profitably, then the comparisons with the Detroit 3 will be valid.

Until then, sit down and shut up. Fiskers are basically rebodied BMWs anyway. So they’re not even doing most of their own damn work.

Raineman- It sounds simple, and in concept it is. But I’ll tell you the problem with most if it; programming. It’s what takes the longest time and makes the most problems. They don’t make it as simple as just recharging the batteries when it’s low.

Now why do some of you fill the need to mess-up this wonderful article, by bringing Toyota & Chevy in to topic?

Any way’s….. Frisker has prove to the world, that a Independent American Manufacture can built Luxury Vehicles that can stand next to a Aston Martin, and a Maserati, and can also be a leader “Green Car Segment”… Better yet in the “Luxury Green Car Segment”

Dangerous1, yarddog82abn, and RaineMan,

It’s worth noting the following:

1) Fiskers are based on BMW architecture and use GM engines
2) Fisker has yet to build ANY cars. Much less cars in any real volume.
3) Fisker’s vehicles will be manufactured in FINLAND.

Shall we list the number of cottage-industry high-end sports vehicle manufacturers that have made it to concept – and even limited production – levels, but have failed to make it more than 5 years on any market? Fisker is proof of nothing so far.

Come-on they are designed in California and built in China, Ohoo… my bad that’s Apple’s I-phone, and I-Pod, and their computers.

And ya I know the car is far from being “truly all American” But look at what they are doing, Even if they turn out to be lemon’s, they are trying to take on every one. The elegance in craftsmanship alone is up there with the Super Exotics of the World, and their concept of modern green automotive technology makes the Toyota Prius look like something out of the Stone Age.

They are playing fallow the leader, and they are setting the pace for the entire industry. Ya they get this from them, and that form someone els, but a Lexus is a Toyota, and a Cadillac is a Chevy, so what’s the difference. They are at least putting every one on check, to the High-Line name brands to the World’s Monopoly of Auto Giants in Luxury and Technology, and they are doing it as a independent car maker.

Sunset, huh? Personally I would have named it something more like Sunrise, Sunshine, something that implies that the only way to drive this car is in broad daylight, because it’s so sweet looking that everyone deserves to have a look.

And what the hell is all this American/Not American/Born Here nonsense? Henrik Fisker made a great car. I don’t give a damn if he’s from the Moon!

What’s your point Inline6? If Fisker takes advantage of existing BMW/GM technology, what difference does it make? Of course it is extremely difficult to make a breakthrough in this business, but they sure have a lot of new ideas. The fact that Fisker has a pre-contract with a Finnish factory doesn’t really mean anything at this point. They have a partner who has the capacity that meets Fisker’s needs and is able to do a decent car. Porsche Boxters and Caymans are made in the same factory and they’ve been of decent quality.
