The proposed law is just about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I'm just a kid, but you have to hear us out. These days it's almost impossible for kids 14 to 16 or even 17 to do anything, either because it's too dangerous or you just have really strict parents. Raising the age won't do anything except infuriate teenagers as well as parents. Parents are sick and tired of being chauffeurs for thier kids, so instead of raising to driving age to 18 or whatever, just raise the price of the liscense itself that way kids can earn it and not get it handed to them like some teens do, which essentially are the teenagers who cause and get in accidents. And also make it a requirment for kids to take a minimum of 7 courses so they can learn the rules of the road and get more practice BEFORE they get thier liscenses, then 2 more courses after they get it. Also, put more cops on the road to inforce NO TEXTING WHILE DRIVING. This is also a huge contributor to accidents but you know, not ALL teenagers text while they drive. I've seen adults with my very own eyes while on I-4, sitting in the passenger seat because I am 14, texting while driving. And where are the police amoungst all this?! No where!! So to end my tyrant on this stupid and unfair law, make requirement driving courses, raise the price of the liscense, and put more cops on the road to watch for people texting while driving. I hope someone takes this into consideration.

Okay, i think that if they change the law, it would be stupid. I'm just a kid, I know but hear me out. I am already 15 and I heard that the law would only affect kids who are not 15 by 2009. That the law would say you have to be 16 to get a permit in 2009. But listen people, kids are really treated unfairly now a days. I know you may disagree but think about this; I can't tell you how many times I have had all the money I need to go buy a new outfit, some food, or a new cd, etc. that I really want, but I can't go get it because no one will drive me. My parents got their permits at 14, and most adults probably did too , or maybe even younger, so they really don't get how it's not right to make a kid wait to be 17 to get a license!? Plus, it would totally ruin the tradition of a sweet 16. What, would it be sweet 17 now? the whole thing is stupid, just instead of making it a law of being 17 to drive, just make kids take drivers ed. things would work a lot better if you ask me,.

1 year really wouldnt help any one because some students need to get jobs so they will need to drive to work but they have no car to drive...if you change the laws it will mkae morew underage drivers drive more and will create worse problems and not let them get their license till they are 18

I like the idea of limiting the acceleration of their cars...

and AngelBaby is right too - there are too many senile or otherwise distracted older people on the road. Its just too hard to pick a fight with the AARP.

The reason that 16 year olds have more trouble is that they have just started driving. If we raise the age limit to 17 then they won't be able to drive until they have already gotten a year of practice under their belts... oh, wait.

It all comes down to training. When I was 16, I drove during bad weather for my mom and other ladies in the neighborhood because I was the better driver. It won't matter how high you raise the age limit if you don't train the driver before you put him/her behind the wheel.

I find it ironic that a state like Florida could think that raising the lower age limit is gonna make their roads a safer place to drive.

How about lowering the UPPER age limit? There's plenty of codgers down there who have NO business being behind the wheel of a 2-ton machine. They should at least not be able to get a license that only has to be renewed every five years. They should create a special license class for those over 70.

Going 10 miles under the speed limit is dangerous on the highway, but is much safer for inexperienced drivers on city streets.

Downshift, I think you have some good ideas except for one. Going 10 miles under the speed limit when everyone else is doing the limit or going over is very dangerous.

With our 2 sons, my wife and I waited until their 17th birthday to have them get a license. For our daughter, it was 16. Depends on the maturity of the kid. There are an aweful lot of immature 16 yr. olds behind the wheels of poorly guided missles.

Never going to happen.

Better to make drivers under 18 second-class drivers. Make them put a decal on the car when they drive (like the yellow ribbons). Yank their licenses for a year for even the most minor infraction. Set the speed limit 10 mph lower. Make the automakers put in a kiddy chip that limits acceleration to the equivalent of 10 seconds to 60.

That's not going to cure all problems, but it should take care of a bunch.

We remember being 16.
