Continuing its ‘One Ford’ global initiative, Ford says it will accelerate the reduction of vehicle platforms on offer by a full year. Jim Farley, Ford’s head of sales and marketing, made the announcement earlier today in Detroit.
According to Farley, Ford will reduce its global vehicle platform count from 11 to 9 by 2013. That announcement puts Ford an entire year ahead of its original plan.
By paring its vehicle platforms, Ford will be able to take advantage of cost savings. The shift to fewer platforms will greatly reduce Ford’s engineering costs and the larger economies of scale will slash Ford’s spending on parts and components.
Farley failed to identified which platforms are destined for the chopping block, but added “there will not be fewer products.â€
