The term ‘crate engine’ typically conjures up visions of fire-breathing, big block V8s, but Ford is adding a new mill to its 2012 crate engine lineup that could start to change that.

Ford Racing has announced that it is adding a new 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder “Crate Engine Concept†to its 2012 Ford Racing Performance Parts Crate Engine portfolio.

Essentially the same 2.0L engine used in the Ford Focus, the crate engine features independent variable valve timing and direct-injection. Ford says the 122 cubic inch engine can produce up to 175 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque.

No word on pricing, but Ford says the “plug and play” 2.0L kits – which include all the necessary interface components for proper installation – will be available next year. For those looking for a little more kick, Ford says its range of EcoBoost four-cylinders will eventually be offered through its crate engine program.
