First, to save Ford a bunch of cash that they can then put into something else that can possibly make money for them. And second the UAW is creating a little more job security for its Ford members by bringing their wages more in line with the GM & Chrysler. And I quote "....the pending agreement will likely include a wage freeze for new hires, a one-time bonus, a no-strike provision at contact expiration, as well as production commitments." That should read CONTRACT not CONTACT I believe, which will provide Ford with a better ability to "...improve its current and long-term competitiveness in the United States.” by freeing up more capital otherwise lost in employee wages/benefits for research or whatever.
