The U.S. full-size truck market slowed to a halt earlier this year when gas topped $4 a gallon, but prices have since recessed, allowing for at least a slight recovery in the segment. Ford is hoping its all-new 2009 F-150 will continue the segment’s recovery and on Friday released pricing for its newest truck offerings.
Those brave enough to wade back into the full-size truck waters can get behind the wheel of a base model F-150 Regular Cab XL for just $21,320. The step-up STX will retail from $24,120 while the XLT will set buyers back at least $25,290 – about a $1,000 savings over a comparably equipped 2008 F-150 model. All XL, STX and XLT models come equipped with a 4.6L V8 and a four-speed automatic transmission.
The step up to the FX4 model will run $34,605, but will also include a six-speed automatic transmission. From there, prices run all the way up to $44,860 for a fully loaded Platinum edition – which essentially replaces the Lincoln Blackwood luxury truck.
Ford also notes that a mid-level F-150 Lariat SuperCrew will list for about $5,000 less than a comparably equipped 2009 Dodge Ram – another full-size truck that is all new for the ’09 model year.
The new F-150 leads the class in towing and payload capacity, and also ties the segment’s best for fuel economy when equipped with Ford’s SFE package.

Not a bad price for a truck. No wonder the F-150 leads the pack. I have to say if I was in the market for a new truck it would be hard to convince me to buy something other than a Ford.

It’ll have to be a lot different than the outgoing model to really compete. The Dodge is totally redesigned and the GM trucks are pretty impressive. SFE seems like a marketing joke, a real shame Ford would stoop to that level.

They’re all good rigs. Unless you’re blindly loyal to one or the other, price should certainly be a factor.

All the trucks have came along way form Grandpa’s old rust bucket, We will see more innovation as time goes by, if MPG is your concern then a truck is not for you, those of us that need them for work or to haul our toys or to play in the dirt, sand, snow, mud, well I’m glad the U.S. auto makers are keeping us happy, and ya SFE is a lame joke….

It will sell on price alone. Very few will use the 3k payload option.
It’s low on power vs the competition, and for the same economy, you can get a stronger engine at GM.
The look is definitely a step back. Goes from front to back of the pack.
The 2010 F-150 diesel will also start out behind the GM.
Fourth best, in my book.
In the 90’s it was the truck.
Too bad.
Ford is making many poor designs, and delaying the good one (Verve/Fiesta)
