Ford: another supercar still possible

When asked if Ford had a successor to the Ford GT in the pipeline, Marketing Manager John Alguire said enthusiasts should not rule out the possibility. In an interview with Edmunds, Alguire would not commit to any specifics, but would not deny plans either. Ford recently announced that it would end production of the GT early, as a part of its “Way Forward” plan. While some fans have speculated that production of the supercar could be moved to a different plant, Alguire said the reasons for ending the GT go beyond the Wixom plant closure. He said new government regulations also make production of the GT impossible in 2007. He said it would require a significant investment to update the GT to meet these rules. Regarding a new supercar down the road, Alguire said Ford learned a lot from making the GT, and how to make such a car profitable. The Leftlane Perspective: It sounds like Ford will take some time off from building supercars, and possibly come back with another model when its financial situation is more secure. We’d love to see Shelby GR-1 Concept (shown right) built one day. But this time, price it against the Corvette.
