Like to preface by saying I don't claim much knowledge regarding pony cars. My buddy has a 05' Mustang GT. To me, it fits the bill as a modern pony car (ie big engine, compact, and affordable). However, i don't see how having rear independent would be mutually exclusive to future models as technology advances and people's expectations rise accordingly.

Dude Theshadow, what are you taking about the gt500 was compleatly done with Shelbys help. Hes the one that said not to use the Independent Rear suspension set up becasue it couldnt handle the power they were planning on useing. That and yes cost because if they keep breaking them then it would be costly to replace them. The Ford GT set up would have worked but do to to many modeifications to make it fit would have cost to much and the price would be to high to fit the clintal that would be buying the Gts. The other thing is that this is a pony car, and in order for a pony car to be a pony car it has to drive like one. If you want a great handle car that you want to take to the race track and be smooth on the road and drive to work then buy a M3, not a mustang. Its in its own right is only it the last of the pony cars thats what makes it specail. If you want everything else it would no longer be a pony car. A solid rear axle has other advangtages as well its stronger last longet less maintance, more durable and yea this car is more set up for drag raceing now if you have read anything about the new GT500 they have said that the handleing is great. And like they also said this is the first Mustange GT Shelby that Carroll has put his hands into since 1971, so read more before you start correcting me. However you can correct my spelling if you would like that I can say isnt the greatest.

Foster, they used a solid read axle for the Mustang to save on costs and to appeal to the Mustang's core redneck drag-racer audience.

The platform that the Mustang is based on, which was usede by the Thunderbird, Jag S-TYPE and Lincoln LS originally had independent rear suspension.

Curious to know what makes you think that Carrol Shelby had anything at all to do with the engineering of the new Mustang, even the GT500 that has his name on it. Because he didn't. He's a legend for sure, but a 90 year old one with a bad ticker who stopped getting his hands dirty a long time ago.

The Way Forward is a solid rear axle?

Panhard rods are Ford's luxury future?

Are torsion-bar fronts next??
