Ford has announced a major step forward in its initiative to go green as the Dearborn-based automaker has become the first car maker to join ‘The Climate Registry’. The TCR is a non-profit group that measures and reports publicly greenhouse gas emissions by using a single standard of measurement across all industry sectors.
By adopting TCR’s standards — which are accepted by nearly all U.S. states, some Canadian provinces and several Mexican states — Ford can use one standard for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions, rather than using the current patchwork of reporting standards used throughout the world.
By joining the TCR, Ford will now have to report its greenhouse gas emissions annually — the result of which will be made available to the public, according to Motor Authority. Unlike some current greenhouse gas emissions programs, TCR’s also takes into account the production process — meaning Ford’s production plants will have to be just as green as its vehicles.
Ford’s entry into the TCR seems to be a smart decision since it will force Ford to clean up its operations or lose favor with the general public. While the program is completely voluntary at this point, hopefully other automakers will follow Ford’s lead.
