The new 5.0 is a full alloy block, Alloy heads, 4 valves per cylinder, Double overhead cams, And direct injection. Which is where it will get it's fuel economy from and the emmisions will hit the euro 4 standards which is why you may not even see this engine till July 1st 2010.

The new 5.0 is based on the 4.6 mod motor, but is completely new, not a bored or stroked 4.6. Its aluminum block, DOHC 4v aluminum heads, with gas direct injection, which allows the use of more compression as the intake charge is much cooler, GDI also improves low rpm torque. As Robert said it may not appear in the 2010, although there are rumors of a non GDI version being used in the 2010. Ive read from Ford insiders 400hp 360 tq. with 6spd auto or manual. I get 24 mpg with the cruise set on 75 on my 2005 4.6. The new 5.0 will better the 4.6 MPG.
The Twin turbo V6 has already been approved for the 2010. Not sure what hp will be in the Ecoboost V6, but its reported to make as much as 400 and better the MPG of the 5.0. Probable less in the Mustang.
What no one knows is what will be the GT motor or if the 5.0 will be a SE motor only.
The Mustang will weigh in around 35-3600. As was mentioned previously, the Camaro will be in the 4100 range and the Challenger 44-4500, so if th eMustang is a boat, I'm not sure what you would call the other 2.
There are rumors of an eco boost 5.0 for the Shelby, but who knows.

Robert... nice posting. But exactly how is Ford planning on running any kind of boosted engine on 87 octane?
I mean sure, with today's ECUs the computer can pull timing when it senses knock... but then you are just wasting all that boost. GM's boosted engines can run on regular gasoline, but they are dogs and run like shit when you do it. Even the owners manual says PREMIUM FUEL RECCOMENDED.
Anything over 5PSI, even with intercooling and direct injection will require high octane fuel to prevent detonation, improve economy, enhance performance, and increase the lifespan of the engine.

In America and we have the right to buy everything from weenie mobiles to the whole hog. Too many of you have been raised to look into everyone’s business and look for something to worry everyone about. Lighten up – life is short – drive for fun a little instead of for Algore.

It leaves me perplexed that people who buy Mustangs actually care about MPG, well that's what I'm getting from the response from you guys. If you want MPG buy a diesel or a Prius, but people buy Mustangs because of its Bang for Buck and it's a muscle car. Good to hear they are increasing power cause the old car was a bit wet. But I wonder how much the price will go up to now??

The idiots reign again...

Mustang weighs less than the Challenger by 500 lbs. It is expected to weigh 400 less than the Camaro.

The base V6 in the 2010 Mustang should have 260hp/260tq out of a 3.7 (that could change - those are the rumored truck numbers, although it is the same basic design) that gets about 5-7% better mileage than the current 4.0.

The 5.0 is not a bored out 4.6. It is a new engine. It will also not be available on the 2010 Mustang redesign from what I've heard, but on the 2011MY that launches in very early 2010.

The ratings I've seen are closer to 350hp/380tq, but again, those are truck numbers. It is expected to have DI and may be turned into a turbo application as a diesel alternative in the future for the Super Duty.

This engine will NOT run on premium. Even Ford's new EcoBoost design runs on REGULAR.

The 3.5 EcoBoost is not a dead idea and will likely come to the Mustang in 2010 for the 2011MY. In RWD applications, the 3.5 EB will put out as much as 410 hp and slightly more torque, and its gas mileage will be almost as good as the base V6.

There are also rumors of a 4-cyl 2.0 putting out 270 hp/280 tq will find its way into the engine bay and deliver somewhere in the mid-20s for combined mileage (30+ on the highway).

Now, that's all pieced together through the random posts of different blogs with particular attention to the Mustang and Ford related blogs. So, it could very well be wrong, but those are the rumors.

I love how Mr. RandomJerkoff thinks that it's his neighbors with their gas-guzzling V8s that are driving up the cost of fuel... For someone who thinks they have such a "worldly" view of Americans, he really has no clue about what's going on in the rest of the world.

Hey whiners...if you're worried about gas mileage then get the V6. That's why Ford still offers it; for the wimps and the women.

Everyone keeps saying put a v6 in there and push up the hp. Really thow how could it be a pony car with only a v6 offering, I am sure that they are going to put more hp in the v6 offering as well that would make more since, Since the v8 is going up in hp. Why would you get the v8 unless there was a big difference in hp. The current gt is a 13.00 second car. The chevy might only be about the same. Ford will keep the crown. Look for the v8 to only get about 2 to 4 miles per gallon better but the v6 should get a lot more. Also AGAIN true mustang gt has to be a v8

Don't hate those exhausts yet because they're not in their shell, by 2010 the 'stang would be different and hopefully would cover the mufflers, I really think the new GT will look good instead of cheap. BTW this is an improvement by Ford, a 5.0 should mean more hp, torque and performance not only +0.4.

What the hell did you people only read the first paragraph?

My point was not we should guzzle gas just because we can; it was that we shouldn't whine about gas prices b/c we, as free Americans we are responsible for what happens in this country, not the government, not the UN, us the American people. If we the people aren’t responsible to are selves and find solution to are own problems then we will lose the freedoms we have.

Whatever happens in this country is our fault, good or bad.

And about gas prices,

I pay $3.69 a gallon and I drive a 98' Jeep Cherokee 4L strait 6. I would like to have a Mustang but I won't be able to afford one till after a graduate. When I can afford one I just want to be able to buy one that isn't watered-down from government regulations.

Gas prices aren’t killing me and I'm pretty sure as an everyday person there not killing you either. But for people whose livelihood depends on fuel prices I know personally there hurting them pretty bad. Our country was not built for high fuel prices but the fact is we haven't reached our tipping point yet. Things are going to get worse until we decide as a nation to do something about it. If we don't then we'll continue to be commoners to be taxed and fools to be marketed to.

Great, Ford increases their engine by 0.4 liters to a whopping 5.0 while the Camaro is increasing by 0.5 from 5.7 to 6.2L. And it will still have more power, more torque, get better gas mileage and get better gains with mods. Let's face it, since the big block era, the only fast Mustangs have been supercharged.

there is a 302 4v motor ford sells, it had some issues with emissions for productions, maybe they have worked out the bugs, as a crate motor it produced something like 400 bhp and 400 foot pounds, it had a rather nice horsepower curve, i hope we're lucky enough to see a motor like that in production, ford needs to step it up vs the challenger and camaro.

C'mon guys, I doubt Ford is going back to the pushrod 5.0 motor, I'm guessing its a modular 5.0 motor. People have added some cubes to there 4.6 making it a 5.0 already. The mod motors have proven themselves already.

Yea, in America we do what we want. We don't care if our thirsty V8's drive up the price of gas for our neighbors. We don't care if they produce more pollution than is necessary. We do want we want, because in America it's all about me, me, me, and my excess of conspicuous consumption. If you can afford it, fuck everyone and everything else - gratify yourself! Yee-haw I'm so proud to be an American.

Make sure to let the faucet run when you brush your teeth, you can afford it!

Sorry BlackX... the Mustang is neither fast... nor expensive... nor powerful.

And JedS88 everyone is paying upwards of $3.50/gal for gas because of "petrolheads" like you who think they need a monster V8 or a huge truck to compensate for there lack of... other things.

No matter how high gas prices go, there's always a market for cars like this. In Montreal gas is $5 a gallon and no one is flinching. Besides, if you buy this as a weekend driver, you're not going to go through more than a tank every few weeks.

Who gives a flying f*** about gas prices. If you can't afford gas then you’re spending in the wrong place you whine bitches.

This is the USA, if I want a 600hp Mustang with a 7.0L engine regardless of the gas mileage then I'll buy one b/c we don't live f***ing U.S.S.R., China or Burma.

If you people don't pull your heads out of your asses or McCain, Clinton or Obama will be making us drive Yugos or something close to it and it'll be all your fault.

The nation is meant to be for the people and by the people and none of you have any idea of what’s going on.

My point is everyone including myself needs to responsible for ourselves instead of trusting our needs and freedoms to politicians and either get in a whine uproar or believe there pathetic excuses when find out there just in it for themselves.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

They could have put a boosted 6 in there that was 300/300 and sales still would have gone up. Lighter weight... better mileage... and boost to play with.

400/400 is quite nice, but Ford needs to think about their avg buyer and really focus on the gas mileage. Yes, this engine is more efficient that thier past one, but they could make a smaller V8 with 350/350 and be even more efficient. The mustang is a mass selling sporty car, so it is important that it reach a broad audience.

This is an updated 15 year old engine, not an old 302. Still will have overhead cams, not pushrods. Look for 4 valves per cylinder, and a few other tricks. If they can get the weight down, gas mileage will surprise everyone.
