Actually, the 400hp C6 Vette is faster/quicker than the GT500 due to the better weight distribution. I’d still rather have a GT500 because it’s much cooler, a pure muscle car.

Ok I can see this kind of Halo car for the Ford Mustang, However is this really the “Way For(d)ward? I think they need to worry more about the crappy Focus they still offer us here while the Japanese catapult light years ahead of Ford and since the gas prices look to continue on the way up thanks to the Mid-East is a car like this really a “Bold Move”? Where is the Scion xB Fighter? Where is the Civic Crusher? Where oh where will Ford be in a couple years since their stock has been reduced even further into junk status? Come on Ford GET WITH THE PROGRAM OR JOIN THE RANKS OF AMC, Rover and the rest of those defunct car manufacturers.

$60k is too much for this car. $100k is laughable. It’s got a great engine and transmission but the overall car just doesn’t justify the price.
I’ll take a $36k Lancer Evolution MR, thank you.
Ford, I DARE YOU to build something to compete with that little car.
Hell, I dare you to compete with the Corvette, as others have already pointed out.
Got to get a lot bolder than that, Ford.

Why do people continue to compare this car to a Vette? There is no comparison. One car is a two-seater that costs thousands more.
And, for those that think that 12’s is slow for this new Mustang….think again. This is an eay 11 second car with someone who can drive and will mod easily and cheaply like any mustang.

Craig, I just saw your comments…..You dare Ford to build a car that will run against a Vette. They did, it’s called a Ford GT. But, again, it’s a silly comparison when you compare cost alone.
Unless you are ready to race for pinks where ONLY speed matters, why do people insist on comparing cars that cost thousands apart.
As for you paying $35k for a Lancer, only a few thousand people in this country will share those sentiments. For me, I can not imagine spending those kinds of funds on a Lancer and not feeling anything but silly. I can see it now, 20 years in the future, on the Barret Jackson Stage a 2006 Lancer riding across the stage…NOT. The Lancer might be fast, but it is still a Lancer and has no herritage. Hell, I could strap a rocket on my back while riding a skate board and beat a Vette, does that make it better then one?

How does the Lancer have no heritage? It’s one of the greatest rally cars in the world along with the Subaru WRX, if I’m not mistaken. That’s something I’d call heritage.

Each and every car is different, so how can they be compared? Personally, It annoys me how people stick up for one manufacturer when they probably don’t know that much about their favorite or their hated brand.
Cars are overpriced anyway and the people who can afford them don’t appreciate them, and I’m always overtaking performance cars in my $700 bomb. Now THAT s**ts me. And why get so terratorial? If YOU can afford a car this expensive, choose one and buy it. If you can’t afford one, why complain about them?

The new ford Mustang has brought new life into a seemingly dull design era . Whena honda S 2000 approaches from the rear or is that a new viper ? ,it is nice to know that a manufacturer has made a car that can distinguish itself among a sea of non expressive design. As to proformance the street is a great equalizer as well as driver input . I think I see more mustangs being driven as they were built to be , hard to the limit rather than drivers of the usual competitors.

The GT500 did not test a lot slower then the C6.
MM&FF tested the GT500 in the 1/4 and ran a 12.2 @117 with a crap 60ft time of 2.1. Get that 60ft time down, and the Shelby is EASY a 11 sec STOCK car.
DO some research ass.

Walter DR,
You may be correct when comparing the Ford GT to the Corvette Z06. There I stand corrected.
However…. I insist on comparing cars thousands of dollars apart because it is not my fault they are priced thousands apart. The Mustang and Corvette have been spiritual rivals for years, and I for one think its about time the Mustang were built to actually do more than go fast in a straight line. I used to own a ‘69 Mustang. It was a very nice car, but when I looked at newer models hoping for better handling I was left unimpressed. Much better but…. boring. I don’t know about modern Mustangs but I’m sure my departed muscle car will be on Barrett Jackson long before this GT500.
Now as for the Lancer Evolution. This car has a racing heritage everywhere in Europe and Asia that goes all the way back to 1989, and even 1982 if you count the Starion 4WD racecar it stemmed from. They sold these cars everywhere in the world from 1990 until the present. The USA never got their first high performance Evo until 2003. Threre is plenty of actual performance and heritage in the Evolution series. Obviously it’s a cheap car with cheap interior materials and a pretty boring look. It doesn’t have beautiful lines like a Vette. For what the car is, who cares? It’s a cheap factory sportscar meant to put down very respectable lap times. I don’t care that it doesn’t look like a nice, stylish car. It’s one of the very few cars that in any way compares to the discontinued Toyota Supra Turbo.
Broaden your mind a bit. I love classic detroit muscle like the best of them, but the rest of the world has had the right idea 20 years ahead of us with a diverse line of smaller cars that do more than drag race.
That brings me back to the GT500 not being enough car to justify $60k-$100k. For that money, I want drag racing power and the ability to hang with Vettes and Porsches on the track.
If the GT500 can’t do all of that… yeah, I’ll probably go with a Vette Z06, Porsche 997 or perhaps even the diminituve little $36k Lancer Evolution, plus some 100 horsepower modification.
The world is a very different place than it was in 1967. Tastes and expectations are different.

Love Fords, own an 04 Cobra, but Ford doesn’t have it’s act together. This new Shelby now has the cubes it needs, would like to see more, but the car is TOO HEAVY. These cars need to go on a strict diet to compete.

Uh, no the Mustang and the Camaro were rivals, now that the Craparo is gone, along with the Fireturd, the Mustang is in an area on its own. The Corvette was typically far more expensive and is always running a lighter, more race tuned setup, reflecting the price. An American sports car. The Mustang has always been meant as an affordable musclecar, with a version for gas saving as well for the american general public. Easily reachable. Now this car in specific is more along the lines of Z06 power, but is still much more of a muscle car, than an American sports car. If I need to explain the difference then you honestly shouldn’t be driving anything but a Lumina. D’oh!

The new Shelby GT500 is a nice car for what it is. It is not worth the current excessive mark up, a 500 horsepower car for $45,000 is a pretty good deal by anyones standards.
I have owned four Corvettes and five Mustangs. Both cars have their plusses and minuses.
For those who need a history lessen, the comparison between the Corvette and Mustang goes back to early 1965 when the Shelby GT350 beat the Corvette racing in SCCA class B. There was nothing to compare the Mustang to, It was closest to cars like the Corvair and the Falcon at the time. The Mustang and Corvette are in two different types of cars. While it is not fair to compare cars that are as more than $10,000 apart. There are compromises in each car that would be changed if there were race versions. The Mustang would not have a back seat like the 1965 Shelby’s did not have a back seat. The cars are produced to have the best appeal to an audience, not the best performance possible. The statistics of the car as produced are only a portion of how good a car really is.
The best thing about the times we live in today are that there are plenty of bolt on modifications that can make a Corvette or a Mustang virtually anything you want it to be.
The best thing about the new Shelby GT500 is that it introduces drivers to some of the muscle car history. Thus re-introducing the cars of the 1960’s and early 1970’s to another generation.

Most of you guys cant handle 500 HP! You will take a 12 sec car and turn it into 13. It will be fun trying to get those rear wheels from spinning so much. I have a C6 and those older guys 40+ dont deserve one because they cant drive em. With a budget of around 80K to spend on a car Im set on the GT500. I’ll spend some dough on getting that 60 footime down and kill Vipers and ZO6’s all day. I’ll be the only 24 year old in Houston with a GT500. Later Haters.
