Ford announced a major milestone this week as the Dearborn-based automaker has produced its 9 millionth Mustang. The historic mark was reached just after the Mustang’s 44th anniversary. The Mustang was first introduced at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964.
Lucky number 9 million was a Mustang GT Convertible that is headed to a dealership in Iowa.
Since the Mustang’s launch back in 1964, it has dominated the sales charts. Within the first 12 months on the market, Ford sold 419,000 examples and it only took two years to top the million mark. The Mustang is also Ford’s longest-running nameplate.

You know, I really hate Ford in general but I really do dig the Mustang, especially in black with big black chrome-lipped 19s. It’s really menacing and the V8 sounds awesome. Kudos to Ford, I really hope they finally turn around.

howsmydriving: with the exception of the Mustang II how can you say they bore little resemblance to the original? And even those were still rear drive with an available V8. I say the Mustang has survived because it has not strayed too far from the original. For the most part they have always been defined as inexpensive American muscle and best bang for the buck. Sure their have been some dogs, but despite Ford’s best effort to occasionally screw it up it’s still with us and, really, better than ever.
Mustangs used to be such cool cars back in the late 60’s, early 70’s. The one from the movie Bullit was the coolest one, but over the years Mustangs just got cheaper, its image becoming lower class, and now the Mustang is just another crap Ford with an average V8 under the hood. Mustangs have become the iconic symbol of small town highschool dropouts who cruise these things up and down main street. Its also popular with the dumb blonde secretary who doesn’t know what quality means. Most people I pull over in Mustangs are blonde females who are secretaries, or a male in his early 30’s who’s a factory worker and has a criminal record. The Mustang is not a car I want to be seen in.
I waved buhbye to many BMW’s and Mercedes’ who tried my ‘03 Corbra (Mustang). Hondas are a joke if your talking about fast cars. For about $2100, you can get an 08′ Shelby Mustang up to 650 Rear Wheel Horsepower. The Camaro and Challenger will be the only worthy opponents, unless you want to spend $100k on your daily driver foreign car. Corvettes and the Ford GT are faster yet, but not as practical.

I’ll be the last to say that I’m a Mustang lover, I do however love the Mustang made between 65-71. And I don’t care what anyone says but I’d kill to have a 68 Shelby GT500. Gotta love Eleanor! I wouldn’t be caught dead in one now a days but I give respect where respect is due, and due to the high success of the Mustang I give it that.

I was a proud Mustang GT owner and have respect for anyone who drives one and understands the amazing history behind this automobile. It’s easy to make a great $200,000.00 hand-made sports car…. but to make 9 million of them at around $20,000.00 a pop is something else all together. Great job Ford, and can’t wait to see number 10,000,000.

Like To See Ya’ll Complain About How The 70 Boss 429 Performs Or The 69 (Which Was Faster) Or How About Having The Ability To Have Shelby Turn Them Into A Supersnake They DO Have A Lot Of Aftermarket Ummm Providers (Saleen, Shelby) But That Gives Them The Ability To Be Customized. And Just The Fact That They’re The Only Pony/Muscle Car To Survive All These Years Should Stand Testiment To Their Abilities And Dude Why Talk About Someones Money So What You Got A BMW Those Are Known As Prickmobiles So Therefore Your Wifes A Prick.

i like the previous svt cobra with the independant rear suspension. I would love to own this one but the live axle turns me off. I does work but cumon an independent suspension could change its image altogether. They actually tried to make a decent interior (unlike vette, which i also like but the interior is a turnoff). But in my opinion the base models look very dated.
They need to do some refreshing like maybe bumpers, headlights/tail lights. And why do ppl buy these crappy colors and not yellow, red, white with black racing stripes. They should change the wheels a bit too. And **** mufflers put straight pipes on the damn v8. Do you think ppl who buy this are looking for a quit car. Make it a no/low cost option. im not sure but does ford have a aftermarket program like Mopar.
