With gas prices at record highs, automakers are scrambling to develop more fuel efficient models. While some automakers are developing all-new cars from scratch, Ford realized that it didn’t have to look any farther than its current European lineup for fuel-saving models. One of those models that will be making the trek across the pond is the Blue Oval’s C-Max, which are spy photographers just spotted while testing in the wild.
Based on the C1 platform — the same that currently underpins the Euro-spec Ford Focus — the next-generation Ford C-Max will be arriving in the States for the 2011 model year, along with the European versions of the Focus and Kuga. But what we’re seeing here is a mule: a well-modified shell of the current C-Max, hiding evidence of the all-new C-Max underneath.
Currently we don’t know exactly what will power the upcoming C-Max when it arrives in the states, but we’re expecting the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine from the Focus to find its way to the to-of-the-line version.

Backside looks like Volvo V50; I guess it will have Volvo i5 2.5L mill. It probably will sell for less then V50 and will kill whatever left of Volvo.

I do like the Euro Focus and the Mondeo sooooo maybe they are capable of impressing me with this one.

i think 2011 is still some ways off- i know they need to develop, it takes time, blah blah blah….. but who knows what gas prices will be in 2011, what if, and it is a BIG if- gas went down in price, and all of this was for nothing? and then we would get stuck with our own Nanos all over our US roads

I’ve seen a couple of these test on Beverly Glen. Also just saw an Escape and some Foci’s w/ something attached to their rear wheels. Can’t wait for Ford to start testing the US Verve model on that street or maybe Benedict Canyon.

xyunya, LLN says 2.5L FROM THE FOCUS. It is a Duratec and has NOTHING to do with a 5-cyl Volvo 2.5. So you guessed wrong.

looks like Ford finally is getting over the “Not developed here” syndrome. Too bad it might be too late if it will take until 2010/2011 to get those European models here.

Chill, sharpie, xyunya is right.
Volvo uses a lot of Ford Europe’s engines, for example the various 4-cylinder powerplants and the 5-cylinder turbo you’re talking about.

Unless they come up with some sort of magic, this thing is going to get just as terrible gas mileage as the Mazda5 (28hwy), which for a small wagon/CUV thing, isn’t going to cut it when the Vibe/Matrix get 32hwy for the same price and much better looking.

To me, if I was in the market for a wagon, which the Rondo, Mazda5, and C-Max fall under, if better get way better mileage over a real mini-van like the Odyssey. The Mazda5 gets 3mpg better hwy than the Odyssey, but it’s soooooo much smaller. Not a very good tradeoff. Mazda, or Ford, or whomever makes the engine for the Mazda5 has addressed some of the problems because the older version barely got 25mpg hwy. Since I could possibly be in the market for a wagon/van type vehicle in the near future, gas mileage would be near the top of the list of things I would look for. Right now the Vibe/Matrix win that comparison. Mazda/Ford could do a better job with the porkiness of that car. The Mazda5 weighs 3417 lbs, way too much for its size.

sharpie, US Focus has i4 2.0L Duratec. UK Focus comes with Volvo 2.5L turbo I-5. I maybe wrong, but based on engine size and turbo (which already available and certified in US) I could be right as well. As Billy Joel wrote “YOU may be right I may be crazy…”

The european Focus has 1.4, 1.6. 2.0 and 2.5 I5 turbo gasoline engines, then it has a 1.6 and 2.0l diesel engines, both of these developed with PSA, I don’t know if the Focus gets a 2.2 diesel as well.

The rear looks like a Volvo V50 because the V50 is also based on the C1 platfrom. After the designers get through with it, it will probably look more like the new Focus or Fusion.
