Craig.. audi also offered a V8. Its not the principle of owning a V8, but knowing you have the option to have a V8 if necessary. Just cause V8 sounds badass. If audi only had the 2.7t, although they didnt sell nearly as many 4.2s, the competitive option was still there

I don't care too much about a v8. As long as it gets some good power. Maybe itll get great gas mileage

I think the media got it wrong, the MKS will not be the flaship for Lincoln the real flagship will be in 09 with the new 6.2lt engine on it so people dont be scared because Lincoln will have a v8 and for the mks I prefer a 6 with more hp than and 8

"Luxury drivers want a soft comfortable flashy cruiser with endless reserves of power that you can only get from a V8. The zeta DTS and Chrysler’s imperial will crush this thing, this better not be their flagship."

The are more ways of getting endless reserves of power than using a V8. It's called a large-size V6 with a couple psi of boost. As someone has already pointed out, ford is producing a turbo 4.0 straight six in australia that is making about 350hp and 350lb-ft, and is faster and lighter than the 5.4 V8 that is also available for a specific vehicle.

"Today's buyers want power to go with their luxury…Cadillac, Mercedes, BMW, heck, even Chrysler has a V8 in the form of the magnificent Hemi!"

Magnificent Hemi? WTF is so magnificent about it? It's just a pushrod 5.7 V8, similar to the one that chevy has been building for decades. That "hemi" thing is just bullshit retro, since most of today's engines have hemispherical combustion chambers. As I said, chevy had your "hemi" engine in the form on an LS1 since the late 90's.

"The new lexus 3.5 V6 makes 306hp, yet the most powerful I6 makes 255hp in the 3-series bmw……" The old generation 3.2 six from the m3 makes over 333 horsepower, the new 3.0 twin turbo straight six makes 300 horsepower and there both smaller displacement and smoother than the lexus v6."

I forgot about that one, BUT the 3.2 liter M3 engine is pretty much RACE BUILT, it has the best parts, like individual throttle bodies and it revs like crazy. Give the Lexus V6 the same treatment and it would put out over 350hp. The twin-turbo 3.0 liter motor doesn't count, because it's turbo. Of course it's going to have good hp. (But it still has less than the lexus.) My whole point is that a straight 6 isn't some magical arrangement, and does have its own drawbacks, and the configuration of cylinders does NOT make a difference in power.

How does Ford expect to take on Cadillac, Chrysler 300, even the possible Imperial? Not mention European and Japanese competitors? Bill Ford has been the biggest disaster for that company. Where is the legacy of the great Mark Continentals and the big powerful Lincolns?? Shame on Ford Motor Company!! Cadillac must be celebrating again!

LOL!!!!!

This would be so VERY sad if it weren't so COMICAL!!! LOL!! I have NEVER heard of a company so hell bent on it's own destruction than Ford!! And they might as well close the doors at Lincoln.... WAKE UP!! You NEED a V8 engine to be competitive in this class of car. Today's buyers want power to go with their luxury...Cadillac, Mercedes, BMW, heck, even Chrysler has a V8 in the form of the magnificent Hemi!

Go ahead Ford, destroy Lincoln.... I have a couple of Lincoln Mark LSC's that will definitely become future classics...and guess what? They BOTH have DOHC 32V V8's!!

I seem to recall several expensive V6 Audi cars being twin turbocharged. Audi sells quite a few cars each year. Gee, how about that...

Lincoln has lost all of their presitge as of 1983. They, like the rest of Ford Motor Company, NEED to build interesting cars in each product segment that stand out from their competitors while at the same time meeting the expectations buyers of, say, a luxury car might have.

Give folks a test drive and I think they'll be pleased if they get the rest of the car right.

2006300C, if a Lincoln always has to be considered a "soft, comfortable, flashy cruiser" that isn't responsive in any way then I suppose I am indeed not a luxury car buyer. I do not consider this to be the case so far, however. What I am hearing about the MKS is actually very interesting, so excuse me if I consider your assumption that luxury car buyers ONLY prefer a V8 engine to be based on quite outdated logic.

Craig, you are not a luxury buyer. A Lincoln is a luxury car, not a sport sedan. Luxury drivers want a soft comfortable flashy cruiser with endless reserves of power that you can only get from a V8. The zeta DTS and Chrysler’s imperial will crush this thing, this better not be their flagship.

As a buyer I am absolutely not interested in a Ford V8 or any V8 car that isn't a midengined super GT.

As a buyer, it does nothing for me because all too often, the vehicle that comes with the V8 is a bulbous, heavy, ugly, ill-handling and underwhelming showboat. Emphasis on BOAT.

As a buyer, I've loved every turbocharged car I've driven, so for a volume seller like this Lincoln, I welcome anything Ford can do to convince me that their MKS has turbochargers, horsepower, a high rev range, excellent handling and decent looks.

Yes, there are also things called muscle cars and luxury full size sedans and limos. I personally don't care.

Build the AWD, twin turbo V6 MKS. Make it handle well for its size. That might make me care about a Ford again: offering something I can really drive and love because of how it drives.

e30 - Its actually a DOHC VVT I-6 single turbo @ 335hp or 370hp depending on the state of tune, and has been in production for 3 years. The same engine is installed in the same car as the DOHC 5.4 V8 (Falcon GT) and by most reports I've read, is the faster, lighter & more economical of the two.
But...and its a big but, they still offer the V8 as the market dictates one is required.

Already shooting itself in the only good foot they have left. What is wrong with Ford?? I think maybe the family is tired of the auto industry, that's the only thing that would seem to make sense. All other models in this class offer both V-6's (or Inline 6's) and A V-8....what is wrong with you all over there? I mean make the car dead in the water before it even debuts! A turbo 6? I bet that will be unreliable since Ford has never done one of those.... Just stick to the V8 and lets keep it real Ford....what a joke.

All other models in this class offer both V-6′s (or Inline 6′s) and A V-8….what is wrong with you all over there? I mean make the car dead in the water before it even debuts! A turbo 6? I bet that will be unreliable since Ford has never done one of those…. Just stick to the V8 and lets keep it real Ford….what a joke.

"The new lexus 3.5 V6 makes 306hp, yet the most powerful I6 makes 255hp in the 3-series bmw......" The old generation 3.2 six from the m3 makes over 333 horsepower, the new 3.0 twin turbo straight six makes 300 horsepower and there both smaller displacement and smoother than the lexus v6. Hell the old bmw m5 (88-91) 3.5 six cylinders put out 315 horsepower. But back to the topic, ford has a 4.0 v6 twin turbo in aussieland they should throw up to usa!

This car is dead before it even left the gate. An american luxury car without a V8 option? Ford must work very hard to fail so badly so often.

"Sigh…when will they learn. The V-6 should die. I-6 are just sooo much better (more power, way smoother), why the hell Ford won't built them is beyond me."

The configuration of cylinders (V versus Straight) won't make a difference in power. The straight engines MIGHT be a fraction of a percent smoother than a V, but it's hardly noticeable. The straight engines are also too long for most applications. V-6 should die - You must not know too much about engines to be making those kind of statements. The new lexus 3.5 V6 makes 306hp, yet the most powerful I6 makes 255hp in the 3-series bmw.

"Buick doesn't go up against Lexus, They dominate over Lexus. Lexus has been a joke since inception when compared to Buick. Buick has and will always be top dog (next to Cadillac of course) in the luxury market, nothing that Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Audi or MB could even match.

None of them have heated washer fluid or or the aweesome Magnaride or the smooth as silk 3800. They're all just imitators. Buick rules."

HAHAHAHA, are you kidding me? Are you saying lexus cars don't have a smooth ride, or a smooth engine like a PUSHROD buick? WOW. Buick dominates lexus? Maybe in sales to 100 year-olds...Your comment has to be a joke.

Wow. So between a choice of a V-8 engine and a Twin turbo V-6 engine... Ford decided not to go with a V-8. I took that survey and it looks like they listened to me :) So with no V-8 in Ford's cash cow... I now FULLY EXPECT a performance oriented Twin Turbo V-6 in the MKS.

And at this point if they don't, their company really will fail.

Mark Fields was recently quoted as saying something to the effect of, "We would sell the furniture to fund our future products if necessary..."

Hmmm...maybe it's time for a garage sale?

Ok, having said that, I'm actually going to give the Ford product planners the benefit of the doubt and wait until the final product goes on sale. I sincerely hope they have something good up their sleeves!

Now that they decided to have only a V-6 in the lineup, it better be good. Make it a twin turbo v6 coupled with all wheel drive. Maybe they are deliberately avoiding a confrontation with the new Cadillacs. Such cowards..Tsk..Tsk...

I dont see how ford can think that lincoln will be competive in the luxury segment. Cadillac offers a V8 option in all their models, and with the new zeta models you can be assured that buick, chevy and pontiac will all have V8 sedans and coupes. Lincoln can't even compete against domestic offerings how can they expect to compete against BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus with out a V8 powered luxury sedan? (town car doesnt count)

I suspect FoMoCo has built more V8's than any other company on the planet, and they can't design and build a new compact V8 for their flagship Lincoln? Unbelievable! Those 4.6 V8's are just about bullet proof. I own two E150's with 400,000+/- trouble free miles and they both purr like new! Some things don't need to be changed...look at the small block Chevy, since 1955, and still world class in cost vs performance and low maintenance.

The flagship Lincoln could do with some engine options, but a V8 defiantely needs to be one of them.

This isn't time for Ford to do their best. To Quote a certain awesome movie...

The current domestic Ford V8s are rather old having their designs based on the modular V8s from the early 1990's. They are at least an OHC design with muitiple valves now which is an improvment. The Jag/Rover V8 is very advanced and made in germany but I don't really see that going into the lincoln lineup. The V8 that the new S80 and XC90 use are very good and compact with impressive horsepower but the older XC90s did not have a beefy enough tranny to handle the V8 and that caused problems. I think they have fixed that finaly.

They need a RWD with AWD option mid sized sedan that has V8 option with maybe an Inline 6 base motor. The volvo Inline 6 makes good power, 240 or so, and is very smooth. I think you can even mount it north-sout/longitude like in certain applications. A midzised mid level luxury sedan with some american style and a smooth Inline 6 would get my attention. Price it thousands below a typical 530i and even if it did not handle as well or go as fast it would get people's attention.

The current domestic Ford V8s are rather old having their designs based on the modular V8s from the early 1990′s. They are at least an OHC design with muitiple valves now which is an improvment. The Jag/Rover V8 is very advanced and made in germany but I don’t really see that going into the lincoln lineup.
As a Ford lineman, this decision by Ford brass isn't a big surprise, just another let down. Ford loves to leave customers with only one engine choice, Expedition, Navigator, Towncar, ect., A car in this realm of other competitors needs choices. Ford should be giving the customers lots of choices and give them a at this level of luxury, the choice to order it the way they want it with out having to pick groups of options they may not want. If Ford put together a car or truck with as much devotion as they did the Mustang or GT(40), we wouldn't be in this predictiment we are now.

I thought all of Ford's current V8s were really old technology, not at all suitable fo M-B BMW or even Northstar competitors

They have got to be retarded, they already have the 4.6 and 5.4, just use one of those. I swear they are trying to go bankrupt.

The majority of small and midsize BMW and Mercedes-Benz sales is of 6 CYlinder cars. Admittedly the V8 is the main selling point of US cars, but it sure looks like Lncoln is in trouble especially with a resurgent Cadillac

What a bunch of idiots. Do they actually think people will buy this when they get a V8 powered Chrysler 300 for less?

And this is supposed to be the new flagship of Lincoln....what a sad joke.
