Ford CEO delivers millionth Sync-equipped car to Microsoft CEO

05/26/2009, 5:32 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Ford sold its 1 millionth Sync-equipped vehicle today to an unlikely buyer – Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer – and Ford CEO Alan Mulally was on hand to make the ceremonial “delivery.” Though we doubt Ballmer personally shopped around for the Fusion Hybrid Mulally delivered, the milestone does show the significance of the Microsoft-developed Sync, which is standard on nearly every Ford.

Ford says that more than 80 percent of its products are equipped with Sync, which will be upgraded later this year.

Powered by Microsoft Auto software, the system’s voice recognition and digital music and phone integration was designed in a unique partnership between the software giant and the Dearborn, Michigan, automaker.

You know this may sound funny, but I bet Steve Ballmer actually drives this as his everyday car. Those business minded computer guys aren’t like car guys, they are more frugal and if they get a free car, they’ll use it. And on the partnership with Ford – His father had worked in Belgium as a manager at Ford Motor Co in the 1960s – and he grew up in Farmington Hills Michigan – next to Detroit – so it’s not by accident that Ford and Microsoft were first to team up.

I wouldn’t say Steve is frugal at all. He owns the largest yacht in the world.

Still my point remains, Caddy-V, I bet he’ll drive it for PR reasons then. It’s a hybrid plus American, Microsoft likes to promote themselves as being with the people, I say it’s a go.

Um….No!!! It’s not standard!

Why anyone would willingly put MS software in their car is something I’ll never understand.

Tpiselli, just be glad the Microsoft software doesn’t operate the car and is just added as a “feature”.

F*ck I must be old. I drove all the way home from work with the windows down not listening to anything but the sounds of my car and the surrounding traffic. Saw my first ‘10 Mustang GT on the road this evening- red convertible with the top down- and it looked great. Some drives that’s all the information I need to process.

1 million idiots who were stupid enough to buy a Ford. Thankfully 1 million people only account for .03% of the north american population. Even better, not a single person in Europe was stupid enough to buy one. Of course its only natural no one in the Asian market was retarded enough to buy one.

Jake, I have no idea what Balmer drives, but Bill Gates brought into US Porsche 959 to learn that he’ll never will be able to drive it on the public road. Another “geek” Larry Elison (CEO of Oracle) has always driven Ferrari and Lambo, despite the fact that he shares racing yacht with BMW. Goodle founders funded Tesla. Perhaps geeks know something about cars and can afford to purchase new and quite exotic models.

@ Borat – “Goodle founders funded Tesla.” – that is wrong. The guy who founded Tesla is the guy who created Paypal, he used the money he made when it was bought by eBay.

HAHAHA Thank you Leftwing!!!!

If no one else saw this here’s what it says about what Steven Ballmer drives :

“Ballmer is also a Microsoft billionaire who surprisingly drives a sporty maroon 1998 Lincoln Continental rather than a Ferrari, Porsche or a Rolls Royce. He plans on getting a Lincoln Zephyr.”

So I guess I was right about this one, he’ll definately drive the Fusion Hybrid

American_Cars_Crap,
Just so you know, posting wrong crap on this site makes you look like the exact opposite of a smart person….an absolute IDIOT!! Asians also don’t buy anything from Europe, they only buy their own stuff!!!
WTF do you drive??

@CADDY-V,

You mean Paul Allen, not Steve Ballmer. And Paul’s 413′ floating palace is down to #8 now. Oh well.

It’s nice they included a picture of a Zune since so few of us have ever actually seen one.

@American_Cars_Crap: you are right. No European or Asian bought a Sync-equipped Ford. Good catch!
Might have something to do with the fact that Ford doesn’t sell Sync in Europe or Asia…..

orangecones, since Tesla is private company no one knows for sure what is invested, but reports speculate that Brin and Page are in for 1.2-1.3 billions each. You are right about them not being angel investors.

I rode in a 959 once – I was too young to drive at the time, but I sure wanted to. It was a very nice, very quick car at that time.

“But wait, you haven’t been to Europe!” That’s right. How did I do it? Well, when non-street-legal cars are imported, they must be modified in order to be used on public roads. This car’s horsepower had to be dialed back a bit, and its top speed was limited to 160mph. I know there were other things done, as well, but I don’t know what they were. I was too interested in riding in the car, and not all the little things. The one I rode in was black, and it was purchased as a timeshare car (go figure) by a group of general contractors, one of which was a family friend and did a bunch of work for my dad. He told me the original owner was an 85-year-old woman.

Just thought I’d share.

Why is everyone assuming this CEO purchased a frugal SYNC-equipped Focus or Fusion? It says “Ford PRODUCT” so my guess is probably Lincoln MKS or MKT, or at least the new Taurus or Flex.

JakeK66: “You know this may sound funny, but I bet Steve Ballmer actually drives this as his everyday car.” would not surprise me.

tpiselli: “Why anyone would willingly put MS software in their car is something I’ll never understand.” Or anything Else. I should’ve bought a Mac, but fortunately, my home computer is almost three years old.

beatusmongous: “Tpiselli, just be glad the Microsoft software doesn’t operate the car and is just added as a ‘feature.’” Good one!

leftwingagenda: “’sorry officer, i was driving along and all of a sudden i got a blue screen of death, i swear i wasn’t drinking…’” Ditto^!

American_Cars_Crap: ExaCTLY WHO is Stupid???

The Stig: I’ve bought one (1) non-iPod music player. One. The End.

beatusmongous: ” … This car’s horsepower had to be dialed back a bit, and its top speed was limited to 160mph.” Rape!
