Ford is disputing a claim by Chevrolet that it was the top-selling auto brand for 2005. GM has been running an advertising campaign since last month that trumpets Chevrolet as America’s top-selling brand. But Ford told a group of its dealers gathered at an industry conference in Orlando that final vehicle registration numbers for 2005 showed they had narrowly edged past Chevrolet. The last time Chevrolet division overtook Ford as the top-selling U.S. brand was in 1986. At that time, the pair commanded almost 60% of the U.S. market. Today, their combined share has sunk to about 45%.
