2011 Ford Edge [Spied again]

10/14/2009, 12:16 PM

By Drew Johnson

With the 2011 model year quickly approaching, our spy photographers have once again caught up with Ford’s updated Edge CUV. In addition to the standard model, Ford is also believed to be working on a Sport version of the Edge, complete with 22-inch wheels and a body kit.

It’s seems like the Edge may be getting a tougher look for ‘11 model year. Underneath the camouflage, we can see two bars running across the grill that look more truck-like than the current model. There might be a third bar buried under there as well. New projector headlights and a lower fascia that resembles the 2010 Fusion Sport are also visible.

In back we can see the Edge will get new, chrome-ringed taillights. A new bumper may also be in store. It appears the interior is getting an upgrade as well since a large piece of black camouflage is draped over the entire dash.

It is expected this new Edge, and the Lincoln MKX, will get the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder motor Ford just announced earlier this week. Ford says the turbo four will be good for at least 230 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. It remains possible that a version of Ford’s 3.5L EcoBoost V6 could also find its way under the hood of the 2011 Edge.

Ford seems to have not learned anything. The SUV market is basically dead. Its a very small market now for people who actually take their trucks off road. And the ones that do will do it in a 4 runner or a pathfinder, not some crappy ford thats just going to break down and catch on fire when you put the cruise control on.

Don’t know about the truck-like grille. To me it appears it’s going to be similar to the Taurus and upcoming Explorer rendition “Gillette razor” grille.

WTF? The SUV market is far from dead, reduced yes. But DEAD? No, Americans will be wanting SUVs and Trucks for a looooong time. That’s a fact many SUV haters just don’t get, but automakers aren’t as shortsighted as you ACC.

Always liked the Edge, a better alternative to the lame CUVs out there. I really liked the interiors on them the most. With the way the economy is right now however people may be laening toward smaller cheaper cars so it may affect sales.

I hope they chiseled the back end of this a bit. Most of the current design looks great but the butt is rather frumpy and bloated. I see too much frumpy bloated butt on the chicks in the office – don’t need to see more during the commute.

On the positive front, there’s a new chick in the office who is a dead ringer for Mary Tyler Moore back when she had her own show in the 70s, I think. Insanely sexy.

That’s how a woman should look … not like a Ford Edge.

WAIT, why are ya think Edge is SUV? Ford Edge is not SUV, is cross over that is different ya.

I’m wonder if they going to keep the 3.5L V6 none turbocharge? cause I’m just totally not a big fan of turbocharge.

Without coming right out and saying it I think the Edge could use a bit more of an edge as without conducting anything scientific I sure she a lot of woman behind the wheel.

OK… screw it… it’s a chick car. There, I said it. It’s just not healthy to keep these things bottled up inside.

I-4 Turbo = V6
V6 Turbo = V8
V8 Turbo = V12

What’s up with that?

If I want a V8 I rather drive the real V8 not with any Turbo or supercharge on it, that is still burning gas but on the other hand is cleanner then the old engine.

What do you think NMOGM?

I need some Spandex…

I’m building a giant spider for Halloween out of a wheelchair, some chicken wire and some PVC piping, and I need lots of black Spandex to cover the spider with.

Or, I could just use the throwaway black mesh material from the Edge. Like Smegley said, the butt on this thing is big enough, perhaps it will cover my whole spider.

ford is becoming the VW of america when it comes to engines. i hope they improved this one, the old one did not really have good cuv mpg it was about the same as a slightly above average suv on the road it just looked more aerodynamic. a 230hp engine should be good as a base engine, wont be fast but should be enough power, hopefully they will get at least 27 high way with that.

Oh, and ACC, go to hell. You’re just as bad as 1115, NMOFGM (and all his clones) and BK09.

I don’t particularly LIKE the Edge, but I at least understand that people are buying it like crazy. I see them everywhere. It’s not an off-roading, dust-kicking, puddle-jumping, mud-crawling SUV that drives on the road, but a high-riding, aggressive looking CUV, or minivan in SUV clothing, and people want that right now. It’s a good vehicle, and should be respected.

This is nice. With the induction of this model, it creates a competitive vehicle for the Acura RDX. The only other contender in its class is the Subaru Forester but this is more exciting. Ford is really trying to more upscale and its working. I like the new direction they are taking. Sounds promising that Ford has not given up, and moreso that they didn’t take government handouts.

Actually, I’ve seen the current sport version that has factory 22″ machined aluminum wheels and because of the massive size of the wheel wells it doesn’t look bad at all. A little flashy for my taste, but it looks pretty good.

Why? Why Ford…why?

Why do you insist on attempting to sell (sales have sucked for the past year) this completely redundant, overpriced appliance?

It has the same tow rating and passenger capacity as the Escape…you don’t need two of the same vehicle.

Ford is incapable of making a good product decision.

Please don’t call this a SUV. It is a Crossover, which is a car based 4WD station Wagon. Nothing wrong with that, I like the Edge. But you won’t see any on the Rubicon or in the Baja

Yea yea, I know Hyundai post like +20% or something, but in smaller group. Don’t see any Hyundai cars anywhere.

Have you even sat in it? Drive it? If you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about, then STFU. My sister had one, loaded with nav and leather and chrome. Borrowed it from her with a month left on the lease. Smoothest ride ever! and not to mention, FAST. I passed like two cars in a row on an open two-lane country road every day in the morning.

“Realist- you a moron or what?”
No…just a person without the blue blinders on.

“Why is that GM is down like 40% last month and so are Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, and others. Ford is only down 5%. That is nothing but good news.”

I was talking about the Edge you mook. The redundant Edge is down 31% FOR THE YEAR…and was down 14% LAST YEAR.

Have you even sat in it? Drive it?”

Yes, actually, I have. It was a loaded limited with MANY options. First, it’s ugly…that three bar grille is a horrid…horrid “styling” element. Second, the driving position was terrible…even with power seats that moved everywhere, it was horrible. Third, the interior materials were cheap, cold, hard plastic. I’ve seen better interiors on a late ’90s GM product. I think the quality studies Ford pays for use one-off vehicles that have very high quality materials. Because there is no way any reasonable (meaning a person who is not a blue-blinders wearing Ford cheerleader) would say this SUV has a nice interior.

Power was not good….but not bad…however the tow rating was pitiful (same as a 3.0, 200HP Escape) and fuel economy left a lot to be desired.

I even looked at the Lincoln rebadge…and let me tell you….silver paint and an outrageous price do not make a vehicle a luxury vehicle.

Titus, they probably don’t have SUV’s cause people are smart and buy wagons. Would you rather have a Mondeo wagon that gets better mileage and sits lower to the ground or an Edge?
