Last week's widely publicized recall of the newly launched 2013 Ford Escape has been traced to a manufacturing issue at a supplier. The automaker said some of the fuel lines made by TI Automotive were "mechanically scored" at the supplier's Ashley, Indiana manufacturing plant.

Nearly 11,500 Escapes sold in the U.S. and Canada with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder were recalled due to the issue, which may have resulted in an under-hood fire. Ford advised owners to stop driving their vehicles and contact a dealer to pick it up. Only about 4,800 were already purchased, with the rest still awaiting buyers at dealers, Reuters wrote.

TI Automotive has addressed the issue and continues to manufacture the fuel lines, a Ford spokesperson said.

The markings on the surface of the fuel lines could cause them to split and leak fuel on hot engine parts, possibly igniting it. There have been three observed fires, two of which involved Ford employees. No injuries resulted, however.
