Ford expects PAG profit in 2007

01/29/2007, 3:53 PM

By admin

Ford expects its struggling Premier Automotive Group will turn a profit this year, Ford’s financial chief Don Leclair said. “We expect PAG to be profitable this year,” the CFO told Automotive News.

The PAG consists of Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Aston Martin. Despite its success, Ford intends to sell Aston Martin in order to raise capital, meaning the automaker will be left with three PAG brands.

Ultimately, profitability at the PAG in 2007 relies mostly on success at Volvo. If the company — which typically earns $800 million to $1.2 billion a year — make up for Jaguar’s losses, then the premier group will be back in black for ‘07. Over the past several years, Jaguar has lost $500 million to $1 billion annually. Land Rover is believed to be virtually break-even, edging out a small profit in 2006.

Although Volvo sales slumped in 2006, this year is expected to see a sharp increase in shipments, thanks to the all-new C30, and the redesigned S80 and C70.

Leclair made it clear the profit would not include a one-time gain from the sale of Aston Martin.

Believe it or not, I believe that Ford still needs alot to catch up to the innovation, design, & potential of the PAG brands. Ford’s recent & upcoming model(except for Edge) look outdated & way too concervative.

I’ve always loved Volvo’s and I’d buy a Volvo without hesitation. Just research the components involved, to avoid GM-sourced parts like the first release XC90’s tranny. What a mistake, I’m sure Volvo learned from that one.

I think Volvo stands poised to have a great year. The low-volume C70 has been in high demand with orders out to the summer. The new S80 is generating traffic ahead of its official February launch. Hopefully Volvo can capitalize on the buzz surrounding its collision warning system, blind spot indicator and personal car communicator with the heartbeat sensor. Kind of like the Lexus LS that parks itself, only Volvo’s systems actually will be useful…and unlike the LS, the brakes are world-class. The new XC70 will be a hit and of course the C30…

Whether it’s enough to compensate for the bleeding at Jaguar – who knows?

You’re right F451, as much as GM wants younger people buying Caddies, they’re still for the grayhairs. No offense to CTS-driver. If you like it, and it fits your ass, go for it. Who cares what others think. I drive a beater $500 ‘89 Suzuki 16v GTI Swift to work. It’s full of dents, and I never wash it. Like I care what someone in a $50k BMW thinks of me at a light. I’m getting 37 mpg in a car that cost me less than one payment on that 50k BMW, and I get to thrash it like a rally car. My like new shiny 2005 Jeep Wrangler sits in my garage all week waiting for the weekend to suck its 15mpg.

The line up at Volvo is hard to beat. Quality, safe, dependable AND fun. Not an easy feat. PAG is lucky to have them, and I expect good things will happen for volvo over the next few years.

The guys at IPD have a really nice shop, and they have stuff for ALL Volvos back to the ’50’s, which is really cool. Most tuners quit supporting older models and move on, but IPD realizes the demand and supports older cars as well as cutting edge new stuff. I keep thinking of tracking down a early 80’s 240 Bertone and restoring it with IPD goodies.

Volvo needs to take the C30 and run with it as the spearhead of a brand revival if they are going to recover from the “blah” that they are in. They are one of several car brands I can think of that have incredible potential, but need to take a more aggressive attitude, Pontiac for example.

As far as the rest of the PAG goes, it’s in shambles. Land Rover is a joke, and Aston Martin isn’t used to its market being competitive. As for Jaguar, its potential is wasted under Ford’s terrible management.

Volvo has been decried as being “practical”, “boring” and an “old man’s car”. Some of those criticisms have some truth to them but that is slowly “evolving” (sorry for the tuner pun).

Ford should be happy that they picked up Volvo… it’s been a nice feather in their cap.

Whether you like the design of Volvo cars or not, (I’ve only recently seen a couple concept cars from them that I would consider), they have been a very innovative company in many areas:
A large amount of the safety features that are available in any brand of auto today exists due to Volvo research and development over the last 75 years.
Volvo has also been an industry leader in automobile ecology, way before it even became somewhat vogue. They are the “cleanest” auto manufacturer worldwide, both for their consumers and in their manufacturing techniques. They continously earn environmental recognition in their country of Sweden.
No surprise that Bill Ford was attracted to Volvo, I read a Time magazine article about him over a year ago that claimed that he has been a champion for the environment. The Rouge manufacturing plant renovation was supposedly his brain-child.

The people who are saying this obviously never compared the previous gen S40 against the 3 series of the same price range. You get a lot more with the S40 plus with a cheap change of real leather steering wheel, it feels a lot more sporty. Plus it comes with better seats and more interior features than the bimmer. Young punks tend to rate everything based on numbers and exterior styling, not on real world performance. The Volvo stereotype is a hard one to kill but if you take off your bias glasses for once and see cars for what they’re worth, Volvos are some of the best deals out there especially used ones.

Land Rover has been profitable for the past three years and will only be more profitable as the years go by.

As the older more troublesome Land Rovers go out of warranty things will get even better. In another 18 months most of the Freelanders, which is perhaps the least reliable modern car ever built, will be out of warranty and that will help even more.

We ran out of most Land Rovers last year. We could have sold a dozen or so more Rovers at my dealership last year but we couldn’t get them. That is how well the new product is going. By the first week of november we were out of all 2006 MY Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports.
