Spied: 2011 Ford F-150 with Boss V8

03/05/2009, 2:45 PM

By Nick Aziz

According to sources in the know, Ford’s brand-new, large-displacement, two-valve OHC 6.2-liter premium V8, formerly referred to as the Boss V8, is now expected to find its way under the hood of several F-150 models beyond limited edition specialty versions, like the 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor high-performance off-road pickup.

The approximately 400 hp and more than 400 pounds-feet of torque V-8 is expected to be an option for the XLT and Platinum F-150 models for the 2011 model year.

Backing up this information, our stealthy spies have caught a Platinum F-150 out driving with the 6.2-liter V-8’s distinctive twin-pipe exhaust poking out the back (see the close-up photos). It appears Ford thinks a large displacement V-8 gas engine still has merit and credibility with core truck buyers.

Are we sure this isn’t the diesel? Both are expected for MY2011. Just checking.

Makes sense that they would offer the Premium V8 in the higher trim level models. Buyers of these are more likely to go for all the options and probably are not that concerned about fuel mileage. Although mileage might not be that bad when coupled with the six-speed trans.

A two valve 6.2… wow. It gets what… 15MPG? I thought engines were supposed to be getting smaller and more fuel efficient, not bigger and more useless. They could have bought LS2s from GM and dropped ‘em under the hood for less than it cost them to develop this tragedy.

Jonmiles,
no, i actually dont idiot! And why do you automatically have to drive a civic if you hate this rather lame 6.2 liter engine? 6.2 liter with only 400/400?? thats seems like a joke when they are about to release the new 3.6tt with 365hp/350tq. They could have definitely came out with a better tuned engine with the same towing power without have to rely on displacement.
jon, you seem to know your civics pretty well, your probably the one driving one!

Raineman – It’s two-valve, but supposedly DI. 425/445 look to to be the hp/tq. Highway mileage comparable to GM’s 6.0/6.2 with more power.

Amazing to combo a new technology like DI with an old one like SOHC. Ford still doesn’t get it. Isn’t the 5.0 “Coyote” for the new Mustangs supposed to be 400/400? They need a whole 1.2 liters for 25hp and 55lb/ft? A better intake/exhaust and a good tune could get them that.

I’m hoping that they put the 6.2 into the Navigator. It would make it a better competitor against Escalade.
Even in a bad economy, these vehicles still have a market, so Ford better wake up. Another suggestion: put the Duratec (3.5 or 3.7) into the V6 Mustang to better fight the Camaro. One more suggestion: redo the Fusion.

idrinorbarsaku, and all other retards, it’s called a brain. Use it. This 6.2L is N/A and will run on 87 octane gas. Of course that 3.6 can make 365hp. It has TWO freakin turbos and most likely requires 91 octane fuel.
I’d like to see that little 3.6 two 10,000 pounds. Needing to constantly run at 5,000 rpm to make power it would over-heat in no time flat. Big engines like this are intentionally de-tuned so they can be more reliable when hauling or towing. They’ll run cooler and provide something called TORQUE at a relatively low rpm. Do your homework.

C6Racer: The Ecoboost will run off 87 octane.

The 6.2 will find its way into the Mustang eventually with a detuned ecoboost being the base engine. Thats still a couple years away unfortunately.

The reason Ford runs a 6.2 now is because for trucks, their really is no replacement for displacement. In order to make lots of torque and power under the curve, you need a big motor. Thats why GM, Ford, Toyota, Chysler all have big displacement motors in trucks. When designing truck motors, there are other things to consider such as being under full load for multiple hours of towing. You try that on a turbo motor and meltdown!! Gotta run cooler temps for efficiency and dependability. A torquier engine does more work with less strain. Wow, some very ill-informed people on here.

Funny, if Honda had said it was goign to put this motor in the Ridgeline, how many of these haters would be cheering?

Dr Fill: Do me a favor, start actually looking at specs before you quote stupid things. The F150 is and HAS been the leader for payload AND towing capacity in its class. Its always had a chassis that was underated which is why every year they INCREASE capacities unlike others like Toyota’s Tundra that when released 3 years ago it was supposed to have 11,000lb towing. Guess what?? It was unable to handle that capacity with its “triple tech” chassis (read: weak C-channel frame) so they had to reduce payloads down to 10,200 or so.

i really hope ford goes true with putting in the 6.2 into the regular f-150, it would shut up all the chevy fans, since thats the only thing that is holding back ford
