The sky's the limit in the luxury pickup truck wars, as Ford seems ready to prove with its range-topping 2013 F-150 Limited.

Slotting in above the F-150 Platinum in Ford's lineup (the niche F-150 Harley-Davidson will return as a limited-volume model), the F-150 Limited will be available in just three exterior paint colors - Ruby Red, Tuxedo Black and White Platinum - and one SuperCrew four-door cab bodystyle. A monochromatic paint scheme includes painted bumpers, mirrors and most of the front grille. For the first time ever, the F-150 will be available with HID headlamps, which are standard on the Limited. Close observers will notice F-150 insignia "Easter eggs" on each headlamp.

Additional chrome trim adorns the cargo box tie-down hooks, the exhaust tip and, on four-wheel-drive models, the tow hooks. Big L-I-M-I-T-E-D lettering is spread across both sides of the cargo box.

Inside, F-150 Limiteds gain red and black leather seats with heating, cooling and memory functions up front and heating elements in the rear. Aluminum and piano black trim replace the faux wood that is otherwise standard on higher-end F-150s.

Standard equipment includes a moonroof, a rearview camera, a power sliding window and Ford's latest MyFord Touch infotainment system accessed via an eight-inch central touch screen. That same MyFord Touch system is available on certain other F-150 trim levels for 2013.

Despite the premium positioning, Limited will be available with only one engine: Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6. Its output, at 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft. of torque, is unchanged from other F-150s. No V8 will be available on the Limited trim.

Ford hasn't announced pricing, but we'd expect the base price to hover around $50,000 when the F-150 Limited goes on sale this fall.
