Ford facing possible strike at Kansas City truck, crossover plant

11/12/2009, 1:47 PM

By Drew Johnson

United Auto Worker members at Ford’s Kansas City, Missouri crossover and truck factory are considering a strike following changes to the plant’s work processes. The Kansas City plant produces the Ford F-150, Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute.

According to UAW Local 249’s Web site, union members are unhappy with new workload requirements set at the plant. Several workers have reportedly been disciplined over violations of the new work processes.

“The company is forcing this action by their refusal to follow our agreements surrounding workload disputes, and we cannot and will not let any of our members fail by allowing the company to set up jobs that hurt people or nobody can perform 10 hours a day, 365 days a year,” Local 249 posted on its Web site.

However, Jeff Wright, president of Local 249, is optimistic that the dispute won’t actually result in a work stoppage. “Basically it’s just a formality,” Wright told Automotive News. “We’re still talking with Ford, and I’m sure we’ll get this resolved. This is one step in the process.”

This isn’t the first time Ford has had problems with UAW members at the Kansas City plant. In late October union members at the plant voted down a measure by 92 percent that would have given Ford comparable labor costs to General Motors and Chrysler.

Unions are what’s ruining the American auto industry. These whiners need to stop complaining and get to work. They should be thankful they still have a job, yet alone a thriving market for their products with overtime pay.

This is a manufacturing job, if you are unhappy with the work conditions, why you should have gone to school to get a job behind a frikin chair so your nail could stay clean.

I always here all this sh!t about unions…THEY ALWAYS SEEM TO BRING DOWN A COMPANY!!

Need more oil for GM

If you want a cheap feeling, low rent, low quality pile of crap from a company that won’t be in business in a few years go with the Toyoduh

if you want repairs, repairs, repairs and unscheduled trips to your dealer, buy the Toyoduh

if you like keeping your cars for 2 years or less and don’t trust anything beyond that point, buy the Toyoduh

If you want to be laughed at for driving an ugly camry clone, buy the Toyoduh

If you want to be an unAmerican slob with no sense of patriotism or loyalty to your Country, go with the Toyoduh

If you like sending all your money for a big purchase to a bunch of scumbags in japland, buy the Toyoduh

If you want to risk killing your family in a runaway accident that Toyduhs are known for, then well you get the point.

Otherwise, the Lacrosse is the right choice.

You aholes with nothing but vitriol for unions need to get a lesson in patriotism and protectionism. Without us, you would get a third world, low rent POS import type vehicle rather than a world class, infinitley reliable, highest quality vehicle that will last many hundreds of thousands of miles and NEVER HAVE A PROBLEM!!!

Buy From a quality manufacturer backed by the best workers in the world. Buy from GM. The right choice.

Actually protectionism is unpatriotic because it will lead to less American prosperity. Also, many Toyota models are made in America, by American workers, therefore buying Toyota is indeed American. Try thinking before you speak.

Only some of it, not all of it. If everyone stopped buying Toyotas, American workers would be out of a job, further harming the American economy. You should really be telling the government to stop spending and borrowing money from China because as of now, the Chinese own about 1/3 of our economy. That’s American.

NMOFGM, you have got to be the most ignorant, dumbf*ck on this, and i’m thinking other, websites. I know you troll these forums like a hick on free propane tanks/ lawn ornaments. If GM was this great company you strive to say it is, they wouldn’t have put themselves in the position they are in now, in debt to the taxpayers after an inevitable bankruptcy because of management and product creating/quality that could have been better handled by trained lab rats. I’m not an import fan but it’s sad to say that it’s just a fact that imports have already proven to be better than american cars of the past. It’s only in the last decade that the american automakers have figured out how and what to build, and it took a collapse and Government bailout to keep them afloat. Don’t even respond to this with your “GM is top quality, toyoduh, a label a 5th grader probably came up with, is complete crap B.S. Everytime you post something, this forum sees a decline in intelligence.

Zesty, I’m not really a big fan of either in terms of style. The Lexus is basically a boring, rip off of a Camry, but it will have excellent reliability (as long as the throttle doesn’t get stuck wide open). The Buick has a bit more style, but since it’s new I had no idea of the reliability. The Buick may also drive a bit sportier, but you’d have to test both of them. The Buick is also much cheaper, so you’ll get more for the price.

johnnycanuck,
that’s what I’m thinking. If he works 10 hours a day, for 365 days, his overtime pay would be HUGEEE!! Why would anyone complain? I bet they used to work for gm though, and went to ford to make them just as bad…

Zesty I’d vote for the Buick. It just seems like more of a complete package. I’ve driven a number of ES model over the years since Lexus tends to provide those as loaner cars and that model really feels like a warmed over Toyota moreso than the other models.
As 03 says who knows what the Buick reliability will be like. The Lexus you can mostly count on although our current one has actually been a bit of a disappointment which is surprising

When I was a little kid, my dad worked 13-16 hours a day and 6 days a week (he was open 8-9 p.m. and then he did his bookwork). I basically grew up without a dad. My family has been on fewer family vacations than (most of) you have fingers. Two of the last three vacations we had (the last one was when I was 12) were because dad was president of the state pharmaceutical association for two years. That meant that he was in meetings all day while my mom, brother and I bummed around Seattle and Disney (cool for me, not so much for dad). Dad’s last “vacation” was in 1997 to bury his mother 6 months after she died (that’s when her children could find time off of work to all get together). That’s what a guy with a Pharm-D did to own his own business (he was, mercifully, able to scale back his hours dramatically after the first 15 years or so and I’m pretty sure this is the 30th year he’s owned the pharmacy). Oh and despite all that, my siblings and I have all still had to take out massive loans to go to college and grad school . . . but we all earn less than an assembly-line worker at GM or Ford (I don’t expect to be making $70k with benefits included-at least not for a long time). UAW . . . pull your heads out of whatever they’re stuck in.

p.s. According to this article . . . we’re all overpaid . . . hear that U.A.W.???

http://money.cnn.com/2009/11/11/news/international/global_american_wages.breakingviews/index.htm?cnn=yes

p.p.s. Believe it or not, there are still people who work more than the 96 hours a week my dad used to work. Most of them do it because they aren’t making U.A.W. wages!

When you work for a company it is generally in your best interest for that company to be profitable. Don’t be suprised when Escapes and F150’s start coming off the Mexican line, and KC get mothballed.

Did I read that we should buy GM, because it’s an American company and Toyata isn’t. Here some things to consider

- Chevy Aveo – Made + Engineered in Korea
- Chevy Cruze- Platform + Engine Engineered in Germany, with the remained of the car Engineered in Korea. Will be Made in America
- Chevy Malibu- Platform + Engine Engineered in Germany, Made in America
- Buick Regal- Badge engineered Opel, made in Germany

-Toyota Camry – Engineered in Japan, Made in America

– GM a multinational corparation just like Toyota and makers of the two least reliable vehicles I ever owned.
