2011 Ford Fiesta sedan [Spied again]

05/11/2009, 1:36 PM

By Drew Johnson

Ford may be planning to sell its Ka city car in the United States in the not-too-distant future, but the Fiesta will be coming here within the next few month. The hatchback version is set to be the first model to hit U.S. soil, but a sedan model will not be far behind. Our spy photographers caught up with the latter earlier today, just outside of Ford’s global headquarters.

Motivation for the Fiesta will be supplied by a 1.6L, featuring variable valve timing. No output ratings have been released as of yet, but the Fiesta is expected to deliver peppy performance and fuel economy near the 40 mpg mark.

Ford’s SYNC system will be available on the Fiesta, as will 16 inch wheels, a remote entry system, three different cloth and leather upholstery choices and a four inch LCD display. Seven airbags and stability control will be standard.

Although the Fiesta will slot below the Focus, Ford will be positioning the Fiesta as a premium small car, which should help the Blue Oval turn a decent profit in the historically slim-margined small car segment.

In order to ramp up North American capacity, Ford will invest $3 billion in its Cuautitlan, Mexico facility, which will raise capacity to 500,000 units annually and create another 4,500 jobs.

Ford will market a hatchback version of the Fiesta alongside the sedan in the U.S. The Dearborn-based automaker originally planned to sell only the sedan version, but changed its mind in the face of rapid consumer shifts from trucks and SUVs to more economical vehicles.

Ford did not officially announce which hatchback the U.S. would see — the Fiesta is produced as both a three-door and five-door variants in other world markets — but a source at Ford’s Mexican plant indicated that both versions would be available in the U.S.

it looks too much like the focus, why would ford be building two of the exact same cars?

I would like Gasoline MPG TO Rival a Prius or Inisght that means either get it there with a Gas/Diesel Hybrid option or beat it with Electric. Or Give the Ka the ability to make it to like 110 MPG !!!!

While 180hp would be great, I’m just hoping for something more than 130 like 150. Then it can compete with some of the other cars out there. This model is going to do great things for Ford!

this car isnt meant to be a damn sedan, should have kept it hatchback just like you should have kept the Focus a hatchback. This Focus “coupe” or whatever you wanna call it looks like those tin can escorts from the 90’s. Id take a 3-door hatch anyday over that thing.

This new Fiesta is the best selling car in Euope! Ford will offer both 4-drs sedan and hachback to cover the bases since finicky Americans can’t make-up their mind from day to day.

Without the camo it looks great! And it should come with the EcoBoost as a premium engine. Plus, this is a net new segment for Ford so most sales should add to Fords overall marketshare gains!

The body itself is pretty good looking, but those wheels/tires look way too small from the side angle. Hopefully this is a base version, and larger shoes will be optional.

I’m predicting this will have nowhere near the success over here as it enjoys in Europe. This concept of “premium small cars” is going to take some time. Most people will just look at the size of the car compared with the size of the price and move on.

Looks better than any modern BMW and outperforms a Yaris! That’s a great ad line!

Johnny, the problem with “premium small cars” is that there is really very little premium about them other than their price. The Mini is the quintessential premium small car, and although the underpinnings make for a fun go-kart the interior is cheap crappy plastics and the reliability is doubtful at best. Smart Cars are oure playskool garbage. One could argue that the 1-series is premium but the damn thing costs as much as a 3 series but is even uglier, so why buy it at all? It’s not so much about the size but also about the value, and that goes beyond size. Itf the Mini were reliably rock-solid and the interior wasn’t poor quailty designed probably by NAMBLA then it would be a good vehicle for the money. If the 1-series were about 5 to 6k lower at each price point it would still be pricey but would offer a good value. The Smart Car is hopeless so I’ll skip that.

I agree with Johnnywhatthehellishappeningtomycanucks.

The base model had better be cheap(like scoring with 2 minutes left in regulation and stealing it in OT).

What is it with Ford? Is there any chance that we would ever get the already greatly tuned and designed European Fords as they exist? Without tampering with them? Are we afraid that it would make as well here as they do in Europe? What is the sense in wasting good money on wasting a great car? Ever wonder why Europeans don’t mind spending big money on relatively smaller European cars? Maybe they’re worth it? Why do we not mind buying BMWs? Small and expensive; but good. Profitable too. Come on Ford. Let’s not assume that Americans will not spend good money on small cars. How about civics, GTIs, A4s? There is a market for low priced cars but i wonder how long we can keep on “out-chinesing” the Chinese. I don’t think we can win at this. But offer me a 21st Century car with your best: the European Focus. What’s wrong with this?

i liked the verve concept a lot, and i think they should’ve kept that name…not a bad looking car, imo, although i prefer the concept hatchbacks to everything else…if ford chromes-up this thing, they’ll be doing this car a big disservice…the chrome accents on the focus look ridiculous and cheap…

good thing this car is creating jobs…too bad those jobs are in mexico…grr…

If only Ford was willing to bring the TurboDiesel version here…

60+ miles to the gallon!

Still, I think it’s a good looking car and even with the regular gas engines it will have here in the States it should get good gas mileage. Keep it cheap and give us turbocharged performance version to whip all the other little turbo 4 cylinder boy toys running around and Ford should have a sure winner.

and geralddasylva, I’m with you. The Europeans definitely have it better when it comes to cars, and I’m praying my butt off they bring not only the Euro Focus, but the Focus RS too! 300+ horses dude! SRT4s and Cobalt SS’s run in fear!

I saw a 3 door version at a local university the other day and it was a very “happy” looking. Car looks like its smiling at you. The color was a bright burgundy. Nice car. It was one of those ” agent” winner cars. I think the 4 door if it looks like the 3 door will be a hit……as long as gas gets to $3.50 or higher.

Bankruptcy I’ve been tired for a LONG time that people with modded SRT4s and Cobalt SS’s and STIs and EVOs run circles around usually stock Mustangs in my community. The tuner community needs a Ford to shake things up and and I think the Focus RS is just the car to do it, and hey maybe a really nice turbo Fiesta can be the cheaper brother to the RS? Let the folks down at the tuner shop know Ford isn’t only good for V8s and rednecks?

Plus, it’s always nice to show the world that you don’t have to pour gas down the drain to go fast as heck :)

Thanks, 2WheeledSpeed, how about the Ford S-Max and the Mondeo? When you have a chance to see those in the flesh, you can’t help but ask yourself: “why is this Ford not available on my continent!” The answer that I seem to read in the press the last few years, always mentions the Merkur SRT4. Please! You can’t give up that easy. The Focus we got 3 generations ago which were closest to the European version revived Ford for years. Why didn’t they keep up with their own technology? Not only is the last Focus, 3 generations behind Europe’s Focus but it is the ugliest car since the Pinto. The station wagon was my favorite of all the Focus; gone. I don’t know. Are all these facts illustrating how Ford is making the wrong decisions in North America or is it just showing that a North American car manufacturer is no longer possible? I have to believe that if they can make money in Europe, it is possible to make it here. Just offer the best you got Ford; don’t decide for me that I won’t buy a car because it is small and expensive. How about diamonds? Isn’t it about time that “big and expensive” start to sound a little obscene?

Plus: the spy shots I see here are telling me that it is too late: just like GM they are taking a beauty full concept car and changing all the proportions. This car on the spy shots is ugly. Just compare the front of the 2 cars. The concept is beauty full. The spy shot is all deformed and looks crippled. How is it that the European versions seem to keep those proportions intact? And what’s wrong with a “hatchback”? I dont get it. All American SUVs and minivans of the last couple of decades have one. It make so much sense. I just hope that it is not too late when BMW makes the hatchback fashionable with its GT, and everybody wants a hatchback, we’ll have to buy a Japanese, South Korean or European hatchback…
