Ford used the Guangzhou Auto Show in China earlier this month to unveil its 2010 Fiesta Sedan — essentially a production version of the Verve sedan concept — and now details have surfaced on the North American-spec car. Expected to be offered in the United States and Canada, the Fiesta four-door will be manufactured in Thailand and Mexico for these markets.
Motivation for the Fiesta will be supplied by a 1.6L, featuring variable valve timing. No output ratings have been released as of yet, but the Fiesta is expected to deliver peppy performance and fuel economy near the 40 mpg mark.
Ford’s SYNC system will be available on the Fiesta, as will 16 inch wheels, a remote entry system, three different cloth and leather upholstery choices and a four inch LCD display. Seven airbags and stability control will be standard.
Although the Fiesta will slot below the Focus, Ford will be positioning the Fiesta as a premium small car, which should help the Blue Oval turn a decent profit in the historically slim-margined small car segment.
In order to ramp up North American capacity, Ford will invest $3 billion in its Cuautitlan, Mexico facility, which will raise capacity to 500,000 units annually and create another 4,500 jobs.
Ford will market a hatchback version of the Fiesta alongside the sedan in the U.S. The Dearborn-based automaker originally planned to sell only the sedan version, but changed its mind in the face of rapid consumer shifts from trucks and SUVs to more economical vehicles.
Ford did not officially announce which hatchback the U.S. would see — the Fiesta is produced as both a three-door and five-door variants in other world markets — but a source at Ford’s Mexican plant indicated that both versions would be available in the U.S. At the very least, the U.S. will see the five-door version, as evidenced by the latest spy shots.

This will be a very successful vehicle, and though the coupe is drop-dead gorgeous, I’m not digging the tail lights of the sedan - maybe this is unique to the Chinese model?

I hope you didn’t just make a quirk at Mexicans. Do you even know why they have plants in these non-US countries anyways? It saves money. $76/hr here vs $10/hr (sometimes, $10/day). I’m sure regardless where this vehicle is built, it will be a good one.

I have an idea. Get rid of the US Focus in general and bring this over in sedan and hatchback form. There you go, Ford’s new compact car in sedan or hatchback and outdoes the US Focus in every aspect.

Looking good! Overall this is a BIG improvement over the Focus. Now just offer something higher-end that’s closer to the Verve concept for people who want a little sportier vehicle. Ford and Lincoln are on the right track- now Mercury just needs to get on board!

Howsmydriving, Honda must be more sucky than Ford because Honda flat out denies the USA that hot Civic hatch they offer in Europe.
I still see old Focus hatches everywhere so I have no clue what Ford was thinking when they killed it. That was far and away the better Focus.
And Lau, Jose is a proud Tortilla Boy! A4 was paying him tribute.

Hoosier, keep in mind this is NOT a Focus replacement. The US will get the European Focus in 2010 and the Ford Kuga shortly thereafter. Not to mention, the new 2010 Taurus based asthetically on the European Mondeo. If Ford makes it over this hump, they will have the best domestic offerings.

TomF and Borat, you’re both right- this car looks like *ss, but since most cars in this class look like they came out of said orifice it’s not that relevant. The important issue is to have a player in the game, and no one’s forcing you to buy the 4 door. It does look better than a Venza, but that’s like scraping gum off your shoe and calling it art.

Scion tC, about 2 years ago, was selling around 70-80,000 units per year(although faster than this car will be,etc…most likely)….still… it shows that there is a market for Some types of 3 door cars.
Even now… it’s selling “slowly”, and the last I had heard, it has sold close to 40,000 units in 10 months….so , You Never Know..Until You Try(to sell it)…how well a 3 door will do.
They could even start out with “low” numbers..to see how they sell?
If not… I dunno.

I’m surprised no online car outlet picked up on it since it sheds some light about the powertrain that Ford will use in North American Fiesta which is really great - 1.6L Ti-VCT and PowerShift (6-speed dual-cutch transmission).

beemerdude… yes, it’s a hatchback…. the tC. We own a 2005 model.
I was noticing recently how some people I talk to(I know) use terms such as ” 3 door” (for Coupe with hatchback, etc..)”5 door”,(for wagon/suv) “4 door”(for sedan).
That’s all.
I also had noticed in the recent past , how some reports on vehicles, they call them Sedans(if they have 5 doors/wagon)..or a Coupe(if it has 3 doors), and avoid the word “hatchback” , as if it were illegal to say such a word, in print, or verbally.
Anyhow… hatchback/ 3 doors… etc… sold well for Scion, until this year, and even with the slow down, they may sell 50,000-60,000 units..which should be enough to make a profit for Toyota?
I noticed, 2-3 years ago, cars like the Hyundai Tiburon, 20-24,000 units per year(only). Moderate success(??) for Hyundai? Mitsubishi.. 1-2 years ago,, sold less than 30,000 Eclipses, iirc…
Big 3 might not want to sell”that few” of a vehicle.. perhaps( I know they sold hatchback/ “3 doors”… of the Focus, iiirc..but now don’t, and I was told at the Ford dealership…it’s due to low sales…maybe 15-20% of their cars sold were hatchback..5 or 3 “doors”….they have a normal coupe.. with trunk..now, but I don’t know how well the 08 Focus coupe is selling).
Anyhow, tC was selling 70-80K units, vs 20-30K units for the companies mentioned above, selling a similar style (hatch/ “3 doors”) of vehicle.
The Fiesta may do better than the older Focus(3 “doors”/hatchback)….it looks good …hope they bring bring it, as we don’t need a “5 door” hatch/wagon(”hatch/sedan?).
PS:…. I hope they can “officially” hit 40 MPG, on some testing…would be nice…otherwise, I’d just save up for another year, and buy the Focus…(ours gets 37 hwy in warmer weather…and 34 now, in near freezing temps… 70% hwy, 30% city driving… 55-65MPH hwy, and rest 35-45 MPH City driving)
Our Focus says “33 MPG”, and we get 34-37(mixed..got 40 a few times this Summer, only cruse control… 65 MPH..driving 100 miles non-stop.. to the Fiesta may say, for example, 38 MPG…but on some
trips… get 40-42 MPG..I hope).
Have a good day.

LJ: You’re saying the Scion TC is a 3-door? It’s not a hatchback, so I’m not clear on what you mean. It’s a standard coupe configuration.
Scion tC = 3 door hatch in a coupe profile. I should know, I own one… and it doesn’t have a conventional trunk, the whole trunk and backglass lift up, sort of like the old Mazda MX-6 and the Ford Probe which were also 3 door hatch coupes. That’s markedly different from the Chevrolet Beretta GT I owned prior which was a conventional 2 door coupe with trunk. Given the choice of the 2, I prefer the 3 door hatchback coupe having owned one. I’ve always been a 2 door fan, think I got it from my dad who was always a staunch coupe advocate. That said, as he’s getting older he’s looking at sedans as they’re easier for him and the family to get into.
Oh and given the choice between the 2… I’d take the tC everytime. It’s soooooo much better than the Beretta. The difference in quality could be measured in furlongs. The difference in power from the 2.4 Liter I-4 in my tC to the 2.8 Liter iron block V6 in the Beretta GT is amazing, the tC moves whereas the Beretta just lumbered along. Granted, some will probably bring up the Quad 4 GTZ Beretta but… even for as fast as they were, they had tons of issues on them motors and like my GT, they still rattled themselves to pieces. Half the time I thought the thing was made out of paper machee painted red. LoL I don’t have to bring up the transmission replacement on the automatic at 67,000 miles either do to a blown ECU either. Yeah, from having come from a GM family, I’ve come to learn that supporting them isn’t fruitful. LoL That’s before you take into account the OEM brake rotors that rust and pit from Chicago winters. The costs of a brake job were almost worse than the tranny change. LoL
I don’t think the Fiesta design for the sedan is that bad, does have some heft to the rear but because of the nose shape it kind of balances in a unique way, which kind of makes it stand out. I’m confident it’ll look better in person. I mean, compared to both of the last generation Focus sedan designs (the first gen got hit with an ugly stick before it left the factory… was nasty, hatch always looked better) and the current Focus (worst looking Ford I’ve ever seen, almost gives the Aztek a run for it’s money), this sedan looks downright appealing in comparison. The current Cheese grader Focus might be the most disgusting car Ford has produced to date. If it wasn’t for it having Microsoft Sync (don’t have enough viruses at home… need ‘em on the road too
) and the fact that it’s a U.S. auto maker with a cost-effective but roomy small car, I don’t think it’d sell. The Honda Fit, esp. the Sport, makes the thing look absolutely pathetic.
The U.S. version of the Fiesta will have the chrome grill from the concept illustration, as Ford has already previously stated that we American’s like big grills. I don’t know where they got that from… considering that everytime someone apes the VW/Audi-style shield grill on here, ya’ll go bananas… but… apparently ma and pa kettle like to have a little bling on their scoot-about car. Might make ‘em think back to fond memories of their ‘58 Chevy. Then again, could be the homeboys that has aspirations of a return of the old Rolls Royce tack on grill kits that were the rage in the 80’s. Tryin’ to bring sexy back, y’know?
Oh and Stinky007… it’s a base model. This isn’t an ST, it’s not a performance model. Not every car out there is going to come out rolling on 19’s. If you want it on big wheels, do yourself the favor… save some cash, hit Tire Rack. You’ll probably like what wheels/tires they put on it better than what Ford chooses anyhow. LoL
