Ford took the stage at an unusual location – the AutoRAI show in Amsterdam – to unveil a new, limited-edition, ruggedized variant of its Global Ford Focus, the X Road. Though not for North American consumption, the E85-capable X Road could preview a future Focus-based “soft roader” for Ford’s European operations.
Looking a bit like a Volvo V70 XC, the X Road gains matte-finish cladding and fender flares, a faux front skid plate and the appearance of a raised ride height, even though the suspension is unchanged.
It’s powered by Ford’s 124-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder that is capable of running on either unleaded or E85 ethanol. The Focus X Road isn’t all wheel drive, though; it retains the standard Focus’ front-wheel-drive system, so it’s more about style than substance.
Ford says the Focus X Road starts at €25,175 in Europe and will go on sale first in the Netherlands in July. Though it’s limited to just 300 models, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the basic design show up elsewhere – just probably not North America.

“Looking a bit like a Volvo V70 XC” a little bit? That is why Volvo is SO F*CKED up. Why would you spend another €10,000 on Volvo if you can get all the same from Ford? In former days Ford had a little shame and at least the shell was different, not anymore.

because its still a station wagon, without the suv-ness of big cars, but still has a lot of ground clearance to not get stuck!

Even though it’s not remotely the same car I don’t understand why Ford chose to get rid of the the Focus wagon over here. I see a lot of the last generation on the road and since they’re all basically gutless wonders whether they have 2, 4 or 5 doors why not continue to offer the model with the most versatility?

johny…get out of my head! Althought I would never own one, I too miss the old Focus variants like the station wagon, 5 door hatch, etc.The sedan is sorta useless.

My bro has had a Focus Wagon for he past 6 years and it can haul as much as most SUVs.
I like this car. Alot, too bad it’s not over here now. I know at least five people who would go out and buy this as it looks there, FWD and all.

OK guys, most of you like this car and pile crap on Volvo. This is Volvo (V50 anyone?), can you explain how Volvo is a boring car and this is not?

Actually, this would be a Volvo XC50 if such a thing existed. Maybe not the best for Volvo to have a Ford cross so far into their realm; however, I do like the way it looks. Of course, it’s a moot point since US will never see this. We still get stuck with a lesser Focus built on an antiquated platform.

Ford, You Suck !
I live in California and I would buy that in a second if we had it stateside !
It looks perfect for people like me who are kinda young still, have kids/pets and like to do stuff.
For whatever reason you choose to offer the best “real world” products for in markets other than your own domestic. I mean look at the euro focus compared to our own !!! WTF !!!
If you bring it here, I WILL BUY IT !

Great, Ford is trying to get people to buy their cars and the new Ranger is only sold in Europe and this interesting wagon is only sold in Europe. Way to create excitement Ford, you really stink! Every other car maker sells its best products in its home country. We are treated like we are second clas car buyers and the only interesting modern cars are made by Foreign car companies. Ford you are still making the mistakes that drive the American buyers into foreign cars, way to go!!!!

We won’t get it here, so I shouldn’t complain but… you build a wagon that looks like its AWD, name it “Focus X Road” AND photograph it in an offroad environment.
And you don’t give it AWD.
Stupid. Were I to be attracted to this vehicle based on the promotional materials I’d instantly be turned off the moment I learned there would be no AWD. I’d then start looking at Subarus.

Borat- Other than this Focus, which they are producing only 300 of… what from Ford looks like a Volvo? What shells do you claim that Ford and Volvo share? Exactly. Pure bullshlt.

Actually I did not claim that other then this Ford others look like Volvo. Most of European Fords are based on Volvo platform, share drive trains and transmissions. This maybe a very good reason of Ford of Europe doing quite well, compare to US counterpart. This very blog described best of European Fords and mentioned that they are basically Volvo underpinnings. Something I knew for a long time – in UK a lot of people bough Fords as cheaper Volvos. Sale of Volvo is in a crapper.

Guys, do you all realize that the Saab 9-3x may come? What about the Volvo XC70? That does well over here. Anyways, this car may come, when we finally get the same focus as Europe. This really shouldn’t eat Volvo sales, Volvos shouldn’t be sporty over here (except the C30), while the Fords (when we finally get them), should be very fun to drive.

No, you were referring to the looks in your post, and you didn’t specify this one exactly. Now that you’ve clarified that…
Your absolutely right that they do share platforms. And some engines and some mechanical parts. But past a few engines and two platforms they share barely anything. Even their platforms that they “share” have a lot of distance between them. In terms of parts they don’t share much. If you drive a Volvo C30 and then a Focus they are very different in terms of how they drive. Safety is very different between models.
Also your wrong about most Euro Fords on Volvo platforms. Once again, assuming that American company is taking away from their “subordinates” just like everyone thinks of Mazda and Saab. Ford, Volvo and Mazda came together to create the C1 platform, and the first vehicle on it was a Ford. The C1, CD2, CD3 and EUCD (built and based off Ford, engineered by Volvo) were all joint ventures between Mazda, Volvo and Ford. The only platform that Ford has technically taken from Volvo is the D3 (also known as P2) platform which underpins the Taurus and S80, and the only other major parts that Ford has “taken” from Volvo have been their 2.5 liter 5-cyl and turbocharger.
