Targeting vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius Plug-in, Ford has unveiled a plug-in hybrid version of its 2013 Fusion sedan. Dubbed the Fusion Energi Plug-In Hybrid, the ultra-efficient sedan will arrive in U.S. Showrooms during the second half of 2012.

Like the regular Fusion Hybrid, the Fusion Energi Plug-In Hybrid uses a 2.0L gas engine mated with an electric motor to drive the front wheels. However, the Energi’s lithium-ion battery pack is larger than the one used in the Hybrid, allowing for greater range and efficiency.

Although the EPA has yet to test the Fusion Energi, Ford says the plug in will achieve better than 100 MPGe, besting the Chevrolet Volt’s rating of 94 MPGe. That 100 MPGe rating would also make the Fusion Energi the most fuel-efficient mid-size vehicle on the planet. The Fusion Hybrid has an electric top speed of 62mph, so pencil in something similar for the Energi. No word yet on the car’s electric-only range.

The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi Plug-In Hybrid will join the gas-powered and hybrid versions of the Fusion in Ford showrooms towards the end of 2012.
