If I were to buy a small truck I would surely go for the Toyota Tacoma over the Ranger or Colorado even though they are great trucks. I think that commercial where an angry girlfriend throws her boyfriend's Tacoma off a very tall cliff then it manages to end up on its feet and she get's pissed is a very good depiction of how good those trucks are. We've always kept one used as a work truck for years, best trucks ever, nothing comes close!

The Colorado and Canyon are still Americas trucks. The Ranger will never claim that title because people would rather support GM

"Announcing the 2010 Ford Ranger...when you buy it, people will think you got a great deal on a freshly-waxed 2005 Ranger from CarMax...but no...it's really the new 2010 model...."

The 2010 addition of a couple of new mechanical changes is nice, but Ranger is overdue something to distinguish it from previous year models....new wheels, a new grille, or even some fresh new colors.

OK, Ford product planners...don't even bother formulating new colors...just bring back Cayman Green and Mocha Frost from 1994.

I think there's an opportunity to grow the small truck market again. But what to do? What do people want? What will sell? The Ranger is crude and simple in a world dominated by precision, power, and refinement. However...crude & simple are hallmarks of the Jeep Wrangler. I digress...now back to the point here: A loaded-up Ranger Supercab is priced dangerously close to a basic F-150 Regular cab. Once you consider the F150's discounts, and the fact that the F150 is gorgeous, modern, refined, and powerful...the Ranger looks & feels even weaker and older. The F150 wins on looks & value.

wbent- Last I checked, Ranger sales were half of Tacoma sales, and two thirds of Colorado sales.

I would agree with you, if it wasn't for the fact Ford hasn't changed the Ranger all too much since 1993. The Japanese were high in terms of fuel economy and other stats that counted for their class, but they continually improved. The Ranger is similar to many American products in the 90's- American corporations would invest big bucks into a certain nameplate, and six years later let it drop off the vine when things got tough. Unlike those vehicles however, this has somehow clinged onto the vine with the strength of a thousand English puritans.

Again I love the double standard from toyogasmatics and other import lovers, Ford builds a truck virtually unchanged that is second in sales in its class, highest in fuel economy, highest in TGW, least in purchase cost and a super high loyalty rate. Kind of sounds like a certain Japanese companies format through out the 70's, 80's and 90's yet on here Ford Ranger is classified as "sad". Wow! A succesful money making business model is "sad". I suppose the Ridgeline is a success.

Since I live in the Twin Cities (Mpls-St. Paul), I'm biased towards the Ranger, since they're made in St. Paul. They got a 2-year reprieve, but why they're not throwing some money into this truck I'll never know. The market has to only get stronger for well-designed, safe, reliable, tough little trucks, and this one could use some updating somethin' fierce. My brother had a 2-wheel drive Ranger with a 5-speed and he consistently got 37 mpg with that thing, that's the kind of mpg we need more of in this country / world.

"probably due to its low price and great fuel economy"

Since when did the Ranger start getting 45 to 55 mpg. The article does say "great". I don't care what kind of vehicle. Great is not anything less than 45 mpg.

I guess so Zcar, it's the area I live in is always filled with athletes, and somehow they end up in or near my subdivision too :/ It's not even like I'm making it up either, I know some moved to be close to each other, especially Ferotte/Bulger/Fitzpatrick they are good friends.

When I used to work at a bank I used to help out Daryl Strawberry almost everyday, and the funny thing is he never played here!

The Rnager suddenly the right size again, unlike the overgrown competition. And they have made improvements incrementally to the Ranger. But this truck need new sheetmetal, interior, Eco-Boost engine, rear-disc brakes and coil springs, better shifting trans wih more gears and a week at NVH finishing school. Just keep the strong frame, thicker then the Japs sheetmetal and the size.

Ford quality is still far behind anything that GM puts out. Until they learn how to build a reliable vehicle like a GM, they'll still be in trouble. Americans know GM builds the best vehicles out there and would rather drive a vehicle that lasts for hundreds of thousands of miles without problems. Fords don't last.

I like the Ranger for it's simplicity. Adjust the cost for a quad cab to compete with Wrangler and I might five up my 10 years of Jeep dedication for light trails and surf fishing.

For or Chevy, dos'nt matter, so long as you get what you want for the price you can afford. Both great brands and products.

Other poster are correct. Ford should be pushing the Ranger and other manuf. should be entertaining the medium to small pickup market.

None of the trucks in this class are particularly goo, but if you must buy one, the only sensible choice would be the Chevy Colorad and GMC Canyon. The Ford and the Dodge are too outdated and the Japcrap trucks are too fragile to carry anything but a gallon of milk.

GM trucks are the only ones designed to last hundreds of thousands of miles before needing a repair. Good luck getting even a fraction of that out of anything else

Whatever happened to the simple, tough, dependable, affordable small pick-up? Everyone else moved on to bigger (Tacoma) more expensive (Frontier) or just plain thoughtless models (Colorado).

With this ancient platform suddenly selling well again (and why not? In the new world order, simple reliable, tough and affordable is going to make a truck sell) why can't anyone see that the market for this kind of truck never left, the manufacturers just turned small-truck popularity into a cash grab.

Mazda was selling its B2200 pickup as low as $7,195 in 1991 (my dad bought his second one in a row after selling me his 86 B2000 - which he bought new for $6,795.) It was stripped and had nothing but air, but both of those pickups gave nearly 200,000 miles of trouble-free service, and averaged 33 mpg.

I'm no economist, but adjusted for inflation, that truck couldn't cost more than $11,000 today. If Nissan is going to kill off the Titan, they would be well served to bring in a small truck slotted under the Frontier (low development costs, they MUST be building something like this in another part of the world.) Same with the Tacoma, as it has gotten ridiculously big compared to the last (89-94) non-Tacoma labeled pickup.

The first manufacturer to come back to this market niche with a viable product (the current Ranger doesn't count) is going to find themselves a nice little cash cow in these tough times.

Actually, I grew up near where Vinny lived just north of Tampa. Don't remember what he drove, maybe a Ranger, who knows. Nice guy though. Used to see him at the McDonalds I worked at when I was in HS. Automation has a good point. It is really the only old school, no-frills small truck left. Ford really stumbled into something fielding a truck with that kind of longevity. That thinking shields them from the arguement that their truck is out-classed in every way by everyone (even GM) these days, RSC not withstanding. Not to mention sales have never justified a new model. Can't stand the way those things drive tough.

Whats wrong with a truck-truck? So what if the platform is 20 years old. This market lacks the simple body-on-frame pickup that people used to buy a truck for. Does it need a styling update? No, it's a truck. If you want pretty go buy a Miata. I'm no Ford fan boy but if you seriously consider what a truck was made for originally, the ranger is rather appealing. My only beef with the ranger is the pricing, too expensive for it's simplicity.

If this were the Kurt Warner of trucks, it'd be a heck of alot better than this! When Kurt used to live a couple streets over from me, he drove only Chevy products, so he'd take offense to that remark.

The current Ranger platform was developed when I worked at Ford; only cosmetic changes have been made over time. I left Ford in Spring of 1992... 17 yrs ago. Pretty sad.
