The State Fair of Texas’ auto show has become a favorite for automakers to unveil their latest and greatest truck models, and 2008 isn’t shaping up to be any different from years past. Ford ’s Mark Fields, president of the Americas, took the stage during the show’s media day and unveiled two limited editions of its Super Duty pickup truck, the Harley-Davidson F-450 and the Cabela’s FX4.
Harley-Davison F-450
Ford and Harley-Davidson have been building special edition F-Series pickups for almost a decade. Since 1999 they’ve created eleven different models. This twelfth iteration is the biggest and baddest one yet: a dual-rear-wheel, one-and-one-half-ton hauler with a curb weight of 8,700-lbs and the capability to tow 24,500-lbs, or about 24 Harley Heritage Softail motorcycles.

A well-equipped F-450 costs about $55,000 and we’re expecting the Harley-Davidson Edition F-450 will easily break the $60K barrier. For that kind of money you’ll get blue tribal flames etched in the paint, a chromed grille and side vents, Harley-Davidson’s name embossed in the cargo box sides, a Harley badge on the tailgate, unique wheels with Harley-Davidson shields in the center caps and a fancy black leather interior with (you guessed it) even more Harley badging.

No changes are expected to the F-450’s 6.4-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 engine.

Cabela’s FX4

The Cabela’s FX4 edition Super Duty was designed with the outdoors enthusiast in mind. After all, 76 percent of F-Series buyers hunt and fish — according to Ford ’s research — and Cabela’s represents all that it outdoors, creating a match seemingly made in heaven.

To set the Cabela’s FX4 apart from lesser Super Duty trucks, the limited edition truck will be available in five two-tone paint schemes, with customers able to choose from Ebony, Oxford White, Forrest Green Metallic, Royal Red Metallic, Silver Metallic and Sterling Grey Metallic.

The truck’s interior will continue the Cabela’s theme, with available cloth or leather seating. And even if you don’t own a gun, let alone enough to necessitate an entire rack, the Cabela’s FX4 has you covered with a lockable storage space beneath the rear seats.

No word on official pricing or availability for either model, but we expect to see both Super Duty models in dealer showrooms before the end of the year.
