Ford has announced that it will invest $209 million into the expansion of its South African operations. The investment — which will be split between Ford’s Silverton, Pretoria and Struandale, Port Elizabeth factories — will go towards the production of a new diesel engine and compact pickup truck.
Ford’s Struandale plant will begin producing the new Puma diesel engine in 2010, with the automaker’s Silverton plant scheduled to produce the new compact pickup in 2011.
The new investment will also create 500 new jobs by 2011.
However, don’t look for either product to make it to the U.S. In fact, Ford has already announced that it will stop offering its compact Ranger pickup in the U.S. after 2009.
The investment further proves that domestic automakers are looking to overseas markets to keep their finances in the black, and Ford CEO Alan Mulally even said that he expects the Dearborn automaker to do about two-thirds of its business outside the U.S. in the coming years.

I wouldn’t say they’re failing. Miss represented is more like it. The Fusion, Edge, F150, Milan, Navigator MKX, MKZ, Mustang have all been strong vehicles for their respective segments. Some get almost no advertisement to back them.

Believe me im no ford hater. i really like the Mustang and the Fusion. i even have some love for the 500/Taurus. im just confused as to why we cant get some of the cooler Fords over here, instead of using that money for that you should use it to give us the Euro Focus or the C-Max. have you seen the new Mondeo? or that spunky little Kuga thing? America wants those.

ford is going berserk with the ranger here too…to compete with the car-based fiat strada and chevy montana they’re lowering the price of the sport model, based on the old design ranger, and destroying everything around. they usually do this in here: when they launch the new model they keep the old one and drastically drop its price. and it keeps selling a lot.

Ford is nuts – and this is coming from a Ford fan and a Ford driver.
I am glad they are doing well overseas, but here in the USA they currently offer nothing I would buy when compared to the competition. They offer things everywhere else that I would buy, but not in the USA.
Why they would go balls-out to offer good, competitive product in a market like South Africa and ignore a market like North America is beyond any logic. I like the company, but when they die domestically I will not notice, because everything they currently produce is invisible to me anyway. My next car will very very very likely not be a Ford.

Ok why is THAT ranger not in THIS market? If it is because of the horrid sport track then they are crazier than i thought.

Ford just doesn’t get it. They let the current Ranger fester in it’s current form for more than a decade and wonder why sales are down. Could it be that without any significant upgrade or advertising most people have forgotten it even still exists? They can’t honestly tell us that with the impending CAFE standards and North America’s undying love for the pickup that there will be no market for a modern compact truck with a diesel option?
I’m almost beginning to believe they’ve given up on the home team. Are they really that far behind the 8 ball that other than the F Series and the Mustang they’re throwing in the towel over here?

Ford probably will produce a smaller pickup and not call it a Ranger. It will have an F-series badge and be crossover/unibody in kind. FFFFFFFFF….it has to have a “F” in front of its name…and a three bar grill! LMFAO!!

With the new F150 about to launch – Ford needs to come out with a smaller truck that would knock it out of the ballpark. Call it the Ranger 100 or whatever, but if they had both they would put the hurt on all the truck makers for a long time. And if it took some sales from F150 – so what – someone else is going to get that kind of sale anyway. The total of the two would be a grand slam.

I agree, why would Ford want to get out of the compact truck market. Doesn’t make any sense to me.

You know, I truly don’t get Ford anymore….it’s as if they WANT to fail in their home market. Just WTF is up with that? Why, for the love of God, can’t they offer one bleeding compact truck with a Diesel engine?!? I mean, come on damn it, there’s got to be one hell of a reason to deny everyone such a vehicle in North America.

Let me explain. Rich people like to help disadvantaged. There are no more whites left in lawless South Africa (anyone been to Newark NJ lately?). So Ford has a need to help indigenous people (African Africans) and build a plant for $209 mills. That will create 500 jobs in the future. Then they will import 450 mexicans to operate machinery.
Ford CEO Alan Mulally even said that he expects the Dearborn automaker to do about two-thirds of its business outside the U.S. – what do I need to explain here?

I have a friend in South Africa and she tells me horror stories about there. They’ll create 500 mfg jobs, and about 1500 security guard jobs, as well as 2500 more jobs to verify that the security jobs aren’t looting the place. South Africa is a murderous wasteland.

I fully understand Ford’s dedication to expanding globally since there are emerging foreign vehicle markets to conquer. That still doesn’t excuse them from ignoring their home market. I think a new, modern compact pickup would sell well in the U.S. The Sport Trac is too expensive; meaning there is room below it for an affordable compact pickup. Like many of you have already stated above, the current Ranger doesn’t sell well because it is too ancient. I think Ford will regret giving up on this segment in the U.S.; it will become increasingly important with continually rising gas prices and the upcoming CAFE requirements.

RicardoHead: indeed. It’s also pretty well-known that car-jackings are an everyday occurrence there (usually by gunpoint) and the situation ain’t likely to improve for a very long time. Sad, really.

Beautiful, absolutely yes, but it’s still a criminal wasteland. Average life expectancy is 44 due to the murder rate there. Drug and people trafficking prevalent, 24% unemployment, etc.

The Mustang and the F150 is about the only Ford I would consider. The Focus is actually nice, but it gets under my skin every time I see a Mazda3/C30/S40/V50!!! That whole baseless argument that it is too expensive to produce the new Focus here and act as if American are too stupid to know there is a better Focus overseas or even worse, that it could be had in the name of Mazda3.
And the Ranger. Is Ford going to keep it in the current form for another 10 years? How about a smaller car like the Fiesta? It is sold in Mexico already, so why haven’t we gotten ours? I still remember the Merkur. While that was a risky attempt, why can’t Ford do something truly innovative? I think Ford has lost their balls! #$%# Sissy!
