For the better part of four decades, the Ford Mustang has been saddled with lackluster powertrains, especially in base guise. However, Ford has finally realized the error in its ways, equipping the 2011 Mustang with a V6 powerplant capable of 305 horsepower and 31mpg.
In order to showcase this momentous achievement – the Mustang is currently the only production car in the world to offer over 300 horsepower and better than 30mpg — Ford has announced the Mustang 1,000 Lap Challenge. The challenge will take place at Bristol Motor Speedway on June 23.
As Bristol is just a hair over a half a mile long, the challenge seeks to see if Ford ’s latest pony car can travel over 500 miles on a single tank of gas. In order to achieve that mark, the Mustang will have to slightly overachieve, averaging 31.25mpg.
To coincide with the challenge, Ford will also give away a 2011 Mustang V6 to the person that correctly guesses how many laps the Mustang will cover.
Appropriately, a 2011 Ford Mustang V6 will pace the Food Land 500 at Bristol International Speedway.
