Ford Mustang becomes first convertible to receive NHTSA five-star safety rating

By Drew Johnson
The 2008 Ford Mustang convertible has become the first convertible ever to receive the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration five-star safety vehicle rating. To achieve the five-star safety rating, the Mustang convertible earned five-star ratings in all of the New Car Assessment Program’s crash testing and rollover resistance evaluations performed by the NHTSA.
“The five-star ratings confirm our own analysis of the safety performance of this excellent vehicle,” said Jim Vondale of Ford’s Automotive Safety Office. “The Mustang convertible is another example of working at all levels to offer a vehicle that is both sporty and safe. It was developed with a dedicated focus on safety, making it the highest rated Mustang ever built.”
For 2008, Ford added standard side air bags to the Mustang.

How come noone ever gives credit where its due. For it to be 2008 and the mustang is the first and only to get 5 start on the crash test, thats pretty damn cool. Wouldnt expect it, but none the less good job Ford.

Ford is definitely due credit on the Mustang, they just need to get a little bit of that juice flowing to their other vehicles. The Mustang is the only Ford car I’d even consider owning…other than an F-150 (which isn’t a car).

Ford, you have a nice sport car / convertible, a nice mid-size sedan, even a pretty good full size sedan with an identity crisis, now start taking Toyota 101, and get the smaller Fiesta and Focus (Would the real Focus please stand up!!!) state-side to lure younger buyers!!!

Commodore: I f*cking agree. Time to show some respect to a Domestic, losers. The first convertible ever to get a 5-star safety rating is quite a feat, regardless of your brand preference. Congrats Ford, and hopefully more vehicles with this kind of safety ratings will be released in the near future.

Oh and I never had a problem with any Pony cars (Mustang, Camero, Charger). In fact, Toyota is the one who can’t seem to come up with a comparable pony car to race in the next Nascar series. Good luck racing the Corolla or the Prius

Well heres the story. In this day it’s “cool” to bash on anything American. When there is lets say, a recall, people are standing in line dicks in hand to run their mouths about how “Ford” or “GM” is going down any second, but if Toyota has a recall or some other problem all you hear is “oh thats nothing, nothing is wrong praise allah Toyota”. Good for Ford for stepping up and making a safe product. Mustang’s are fun to drive and when modified with the right parts can smoke most cars out there. Watch here comes the “they can’t turn corners” bull****. Lookup how Maximum Motorsports built a 5.0 for under 9K that smoked Ferrari’s on a road course…

Finally some people like 1c3d0g, rompn4x, and sharpie are getting it. So much “down-with-this” sentiment is going on its ridiculous. BE FAIR. When Toyota announced that they are making a real sportscar in the form of the Lexus LF-A, I was excited and I praised them for finally stepping away from bland, uninspiring, A-to-B cars (but then off course they announced that it was going to be a hybrid and created a new oxymoron – hybrid sports car) but I still was optimistic. Either you guys are ALL extreme pesimists, or you have domestics.
What is absolutely fascinating to me is that these people are so loyal to Japanese companies…[not to start with the patriot BS again] but I can only imagine what America would be like if all these people were loyal to their country, or at least gave their country a chance.

You sound pretty smart. They build such ****ty cars yet they were the first to get a 5 star rating for a vert, and their cars topped JD Powers initial quality list. If you actually did some research you’de know that there is no such thing in the automotive world as a quality gap between the major manufacturers anymore. Ford is rated practically even with Toyota (who has been plaqued in the last years with numorous recalls on current vehicles) when it comes to quality.
For the record I believe the Mustang is the first convertable I’ve ever seen that was tested quicker than the coupe. It’s accomplished sub 5 0-60s and 13.2 in the 1/4 mile while the S2K and 300hp 350z verts struggle out of the 14s, thats’s some great engineering there!
