The Mustang has been a staple of Ford ’s lineup for nearly half a century now, but even the original Pony Car isn’t fast enough to outrun the current economic downturn. Sales of the Mustang have been gradually dwindling over the past several months, culminating in the nameplate’s single worst sales month on record.
November 2008 is the winner – or rather loser – of that distinct honor, tallying just 3,667 Mustang sales, according to MustangBlog – the lowest in Mustang’s 45 year history. That total is down from October’s 4,686 units moved – the previous single month low for Mustang sales – and is off November 2007’s pace by more than 50 percent.

So far for the year, Mustang sales are down by about 39,000 units, marking a 30.9 percent decline in year-to-date sales.

Although the Mustang’s sales decline probably has more to do with the current recession rather than the product itself, help will soon be on the way in the form of a heavily updated model. However, with Dodge ’s Challenger now on the market and Chevy’s Camaro on the way, the Mustang could have a harder row to hoe going forward.
