Ford has not had discussions with Renault-Nissan about any type of alliance, Ford President of the Americas Mark Fields said in a telephone interview yesterday with the Associated Press. Fields said Ford’s sole focus was on turning around its North American operations.
Speculation about a possible alliance between Ford and Renault-Nissan began almost immediately after General Motors and Renault-Nissan announced they had scrapped alliance talks. Ford previously expressed interest in working with Carlos Ghosn and Renault-Nissan. However, some analysts predicted an alliance would become much less likely after Alan Mulally took over as CEO of the American automaker from Bill Ford.

This is actually a good idea. Ford/Nissan/Renault are competing in a few market together. If the share the hardware they have it would dramatically cut costs and reduce overheads.

Ghosn waited too long and missed his boat w/ Ford. It’s as simple as that. Ford didn’t NEED Carlos, they needed a turnaround man. They wanted someone that had worked inside the industry, but in Lulally they have a guy thats arguably just as capable (if not moreso) as Ghosn would have been.

Know that Mullaly has been on the job officially for a couple weeks, I wonder if he’ll start showing a public image or if Fields will continue to fill that role?
