Ford of Canada tops June sales charts

07/03/2009, 9:54 AM

By Drew Johnson

Besting its strong U.S. performance, Ford’s Canadian division managed a healthy 23.8 percent boost in June sales. The June sales increase was enough to vault Ford past archrival General Motors to become Canada’s best-selling automaker.

Including sales of its Volvo Swedish brand, Ford of Canada sold 28,274 vehicles in June, netting a sales increase of 23.8 percent and the automaker’s first year over year increase of 2009. Moreover, Ford’s Ford, Lincoln and Mercury brands combined to lead Canadian sales for the first time since 1959, according to Automotive News.

Contributing to Ford’s number one position was the precipitous sales decline at General Motors – the former sales leader in Canada. GM of Canada’s June sales plummeted 30.9 percent to 22,298 units.

Despite the encouraging sales results, Ford won’t be taking a victory lap anytime soon. “We are not waving a flag of victory by any means,” David Mondragon, Ford Canada’s CEO, told Reuters. “This was a good month and we’re going to celebrate the month, but we’re going to continue to focus on our plan to grow our share of the market as the year goes on.”

Ford expects Canadian sales to be down about 18 percent in the third quarter but is planning to ramp up production as demand finally stabilizes.

Johnny, the Mercury Moose-Marauder?

Looks like GM is another victim of the Canadian Revolution!

Buy Ford. A Canadian Revolution. It is your patriotic duty.

Come to think of it, I have seen an awful lot of new Fusions and F150s around lately. I even saw a Flex the other day. It’s like spotting a rare albino moose…

Actually mayer_ray they still sell the Mercury Monarch and it has the Queen’s head for a hood ornament.

I’m starting to see a lot of Flexes too. They have thier own coolness about them, especially in a sea of me-too blandmobiles and whatnot.

Johnny, a queen’s head ornament? I might make a trip to Canuckia just to buy one at a dealership, or I could just go to San Fran and get the real thing, put it in a pickle jar, and hide it in my pantry until halloween.

one caveat to the fleet sales point… http://www.leftlanenews.com/obama-administration-add-17600-detroit-three-vehicles-to-government-fleet.html

ford won the majority of those fleet sales, which has probably boosted their numbers a bit recently…

LWA, is Obama now buying cars for Canadians?

Not that I would doubt it, but since you are more in tune with what the idiots in DC I thought I’d ask. ;)

hehe…mayer. no, i’m refering to the post a few days ago with the june sales numbers for the US, where ford showed a smaller decrease compared to last year than expected…i’m guessing that was due partly to US government fleet sales…so when somebody says “fleet sales”, i bring that up…

i doubt anybody here knows what canadian fleet sales look like…i thought they rode moose and reindeer, anyway…

I am pretty sure those fleet vehicles haven’t been produced, yet alone delivered and in the books as sales.

could be, bubs, they announced the sales and the breakdown of how many millions were for each company, though…i guess it depends on their business practices, but if there’s an announcement you’re buying 80 million of something, the company could put that on the books immediately, rather than wait until delivery…i’m not a business guy, tho…

LWA if you were a business guy then you would not be leftwing. The leftwing agenda, despite superficially noble intentions, is exactly contrary to what businesses need to grow and provide jobs and improve the life and means and freedom of people.

But to put it succinctly … no, businesses can not announce sales upon receipt of an order. The order must be fulfilled with this type of product. Long-term projects will have milestones that need to be completed for revenue recognition, but cars don’t qualify as such. Besides, this is Ford Canada so unless Obama is buying them there Canuckies cars, I dont think US gov purchases will affect this.

I’m starting to see a lot of Flex’s, ‘10 Mustangs, and now Fusions on the road. What’s interesting is that here (Los Angeles’ west-side) imports rule. So perhaps Ford really is starting to make some inroads.

Ironically, I just got rid of my ‘06 Mustang. It was actually a great car (reliable, well built, fun, and reasonably efficient) that I would highly recommend. I just get bored with my cars every couple of years.
