Some of Ford’s European lineup is headed to the U.S. in order to bolster the Blue Oval’s slumping sales, but Ford of Europe encountered some tough times in July as the economic downturn ate into new car sales.
July saw Ford of Europe’s sales slip by 4.7 percent compared to July 2007, tallying 149,800 sales. Sales were down mostly in more established regions, with areas of Eastern Europe showing strong growth.
According to Automotive News, the UK remained as Ford of Europe’s single largest market and actually saw a sales increase of 4.3 percent to 32,200 cars. Ford also saw strong growth in Germany, with sales up 8.8 percent to 21,000 units.
Although not selling in the same volumes as Western Europe, Eastern European countries and Russia saw strong growth – with some regions posting as much as 85 percent increases. In all, Eastern Europe accounted for 27,800 sales in July.
Despite the slow month, Ford of Europe is expecting a record year, with sales up 2 percent through the first seven months of the year to 1,196,200 units.
